LONDON (AP) ? In a brutal daylight attack which raised fears that terrorism had returned to London, two men with butcher knives hacked another man to death near a military barracks Wednesday before police wounded them in a shootout.

In a shocking video broadcast on British TV, one man gestured with bloodied hands, waving a butcher knife in the air and shouting political statements against the British government as pedestrians milled about a body lying motionless on the street. Bloodstains coated the street.

British officials said the attack appeared to be an act of terrorism, possibly motivated by radical Islam.

The two suspects remained hospitalized on Wednesday night but their identities and that of their victim were not known. One of them was reported to be in serious condition.

The afternoon attack occurred in the southeast London neighborhood of Woolwich, just a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks.

In Paris, French President Francois Hollande, speaking at a press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron, said the slain man was a British soldier. Cameron didn't immediately confirm that fact but the Britain's Ministry of Defense said it was urgently investigating if a U.K. soldier was involved.

Cameron said there were "strong indications" it was a terrorist incident.

"We have suffered these attacks before, we have always beaten them back," Cameron said. "We will not be cowed, we will never buckle."

One British broadcaster ran video footage of what appeared to be one of the attackers, his hands covered in blood, making political statements about "an eye for an eye" to an unknown cameraperson as a body lay behind him on the ground.

There was no immediate way for the Associated Press to verify who the cameraman was.

The footage ? obtained by ITV news ? showed a man in a dark jacket and knit cap walking toward a camera, clutching a meat cleaver and a knife in what appear to be bloodied hands. With a British accent, he apologized in English for the women passers-by who "have had to witness this" attack, saying that "in our land our women have to see the same."

He gave no indication what that land was.

"We must fight them as they fight us," the man told the camera as people milled around behind him. The camera then panned away to show a body behind the man.

The Associated Press examined the footage to verify its authenticity. The AP cross-referenced images from the scene, aerial shots, the location of a car behind the alleged attacker and appearance of a body and car in the background of the image.

The British Cabinet's emergency committee immediately called a meeting and the prime minister's office said security was stepped up at barracks across London. Cameron cut short his Paris trip to return to London and his office said he would chair another emergency committee meeting Thursday.

The barracks ? which house a number of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and independent companies of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards ? were the site of shooting events during the 2012 London Olympics.

Fred Oyat, a 44-year-old who lives in a high-rise near where the attack occurred, said he heard four gun shots and then went straight to the window.

"I saw one man lying there bleeding, another lying on the pavement being disarmed. A policeman was pointing a gun at him. A third man was lying further up the street ... he was bleeding profusely," Oyat said. "There were four knives on the ground ? big kitchen knives. The knives were very bloody."

David Dixon, head teacher of a nearby primary school, saw a body lying in the road outside and said police told him there was a serious incident. He told the BBC he then made sure students were inside and put the school into a lockdown mode. He said he then heard shots fired.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is called in when officers are involved in shootings, confirmed that it is investigating the attack.

Obama must hold Myanmar's Thein Sein accountable for human rights violations

When the president of Myanmar (Burma), Thein Sein, meets with President Obama at the White House today, he will undoubtedly stress how his government has taken steps toward democratic reform. Indeed, in recent years, Myanmar has released hundreds of religious and political prisoners. It has eased Internet and media controls. It has held limited parliamentary elections.

But recent applause for reforms obscures a dark underbelly of sectarian violence and ethnic discrimination, fueling human-rights atrocities and religious-freedom abuses, which threaten to tear the country asunder. These are the conclusions that the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, on which we serve, documented in its 2013 Annual Report released on April 30.

In his meeting with Mr. Thein Sein, Mr. Obama can emphasize Washington?s commitment to Myanmar?s progress, while stressing the imperative of countering discrimination and violence against ethnic minority Muslims and Christians. Such violations of human rights threaten to strangle reform in its cradle and religious freedom along with it.

OPINION: Obama and Myanmar (Burma): 4 points about conflict there

Few suffer like the Rohingya Muslims, one of the world?s most persecuted people. Denied citizenship and discriminated against at every turn, they face continued violence in the country?s western Rakhine (Arakan) state. This violence is often instigated by monks and perpetrated by mobs and local militias, including police.

Based on sources within and outside of Myanmar, our report confirms that over the past year, attackers have torched villages and killed more than 1,000 civilians, while driving more than 100,000 into squalid refugee camps where they are routinely denied adequate food, medical aid, and shelter from the oncoming monsoons. Women have reportedly been raped and used as sex slaves by the military and local militias and police have blocked aid to the destitute.

Christians, particularly the Kachin and Chin ethnic minorities, have also endured severe religious freedom abuses and societal discrimination, including restrictions on building houses of worship, destruction of religious venues and artifacts, bans on certain religious ceremonies, and efforts to press their children to embrace Buddhism. In renewed violence in Kachin state in January, the military targeted Christians for rape and forced labor through kidnapping.

Indeed, across the country, the government has failed to halt the military?s depredations or hold individuals accountable for sectarian violence. It also continues to censor religious publications and ban the importing of Bibles and Qurans in indigenous languages.

The United States remains deeply invested in reform in Myanmar. But Washington?s involvement can be more than providing economic and political aid to Myanmar?s government. It can steer aid away from former military leaders and their supporters. It can prioritize efforts to build up ethnic minority regions, promote tolerance, and support those working for a free, multi-ethnic country.

Washington surely can provide the country with benchmarks for progress. These should include the release of all prisoners of conscience. Also critical is an immediate ceasefire in the military?s fight against ethnic minorities, a citizenship solution for Rohingya Muslims, and an end to discriminatory policies against Muslims and Christians. With those steps must come accountability for their attackers as well. And Myanmar must also ensure that substantial humanitarian aid reaches the Rohingya and other Muslims.

Finally, Washington can push Myanmar to make a commitment to hold free and fair elections in 2015.

Myanmar should know that the US and the world community are committed to helping its transition from being one of the world?s most tyrannical military regimes to joining the community of democracies. Myanmar has taken vital steps toward reform, but only if it acts decisively against ethnic and religious violence can it avoid a descent into a chaos that no generous aid packages can forestall.

Due to the continued violence targeting religious and ethnic minorities, our organization, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, recommends that the US maintain Myanmar?s status as a ?country of particular concern,? as an egregious abuser of religious freedom and related rights. And the US should be prepared to re-impose already-lifted sanctions against Myanmar if conditions fail to improve.

In the end, as Americans, we must not limit our view of Myanmar to the smiling and serene Nobel Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. We should also recognize the appalling mistreatment of its religious and ethnic minorities, especially during the past year.

We should acknowledge the Rohingya Muslims who were slaughtered last July and October, the women raped, and the Protestant churches destroyed in Kachin state in January. We should not lose sight of the burning and killing of more Muslims in the cities of Meikhtila, Bago, and Yangon this March.

We should contrast the photos of brave Buddhist monks protesting a dictatorial military in 2007 with the reports of many monks preaching hatred and wielding the sword against Muslims today.

We must let Myanmar know that we see this fuller, more troubled picture and where it is heading.

OPINION: Obama and Myanmar (Burma): 4 points about conflict there

And we must be fully prepared to back our concerns with tough action if Mr. Thein Sein?s government fails to follow through and protect human life, strengthen human rights, and secure religious freedom.

Rev. William Shaw serves as vice chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). M. Zuhdi Jasser is a USCIRF commissioner and Azizah al-Hibri is professor emerita of the University of Richmond School of Law and a former USCIRF commissioner.

Save More for College Education With a 529 Plan

When it comes to paying for your child's college education, do you feel prepared? Putting money aside in a regular savings account likely won't help you reach your goals the same way other savings vehicles can, like a 529 plan - an account specifically designed to encourage saving for educational costs.

Curious what a 529 plan is and how it works? A 529 plan is similar to a 401(k) plan, but whereas the latter type of account is used to build your nest egg, the former is used to pay for college expenses.

However, the tax advantages of a 529 plan are similar to a Roth investment retirement account since you pay federal income tax on your contributions, but then the earnings from your investments grow tax-free.

There are two types of 529 college savings plans: the prepaid plan and the savings plan.

529 college prepaid plan. With the 529 prepaid plan, you purchase tuition credits in your state's university system at current tuition rates. This means your child is protected against future hikes in tuition costs despite the likely increase in inflation. However, before opening a 529 prepaid plan, make sure your child plans to attend the school for which you are purchasing tuition credits to ensure the investment doesn't go to waste.

529 college savings plan. The 529 savings plan is a tax-advantaged account that allows you to accumulate assets that can be used toward any accredited college or vocational school in the United States. The funds can be used to pay for more than just tuition costs, including textbooks and other education-related fees.

Contribution limits. The annual maximum contribution allowed per person to either plan is $14,000, and if you are married, your spouse can contribute an additional $14,000 each year for a total of $28,000. Each spouse is also allowed to make a one-time contribution of $70,000 (five years worth of annual maximum contributions), but parents who opt for this will have to wait six years before they can start contributing again.

The total maximum contribution allowed on a 529 plan is $360,000 (market value) for each beneficiary. However, your assets can grow beyond that amount through investment gains.

Risk level and investment options. With a 529 savings plan, depending on the state, you can choose between several investment options based on factors such as your child's age, your asset allocation preference and investment risk level. You can also decide to invest your money in a portfolio of stocks, bonds and/or money market funds. However, don't assume your state's plan is the best option, as not all states offer tax deductions. If that's the case, you may want to open an account in another state with options that better suite your child's needs.

For a list of the best 529 plan options by state residency, see NerdWallet Investing's comparison of the top accounts.

Belmont Stakes: Oxbow vs. Orb in the cards

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Another year, another Triple Crown hopeful unable to come through.

After Oxbow upset Kentucky Derby winner Orb in Saturday's Preakness to extend racing's Triple Crown drought to 36 years, the next best alternative for the Belmont Stakes is a rematch.

And, it appears one is in the making. Both trainers are giving every indication their classic-winning colts will run in the Belmont on June 8.

"You know me," Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said after Oxbow's 1 ?-length victory over Itsmyluckyday, with 3-5 favorite Orb finishing fourth. "I like to rack them up in the big events. So, I'll probably go."

Trainer Shug McGaughey says he'd like to run Orb in the Belmont as long as the colt is doing well.

"The Belmont Stakes is on our radar screen," McGaughey said Sunday after arriving back at Belmont Park and checking on his Derby winner, who was vanned back earlier in the day.

After a talk with Orb's owners Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps and Stuart Janney III, McGaughey said, "We just all came to the conclusion that we should just watch Orb and see. I think everything is in good shape. We'd like to run.

"But yesterday took a little bit out of him and he's already run five times this year and it's only the middle of May. I'd sure like to have him fresh for Saratoga and a Jim Dandy/Travers kind of a go."

A year ago, there was great anticipation for a Triple try after I'll Have Another won the Derby and Preakness, but the colt was scratched the day before the Belmont because of a tendon injury.

The most recent of 20 rematches between classic winners in the Belmont was two years ago, with Derby winner Animal Kingdom and Preakness winner Shackleford hooking up ? but 24-1 long shot Ruler On Ice pulled the upset.

Hours after Oxbow's win at 15-1 odds gave Lukas his record 14th Triple Crown race win ? and sixth Preakness ? the trainer and his colt where on the road back to Churchill Downs.

If both show up for the 1? -mile Belmont, a formidable lineup of challengers could be waiting. Todd Pletcher has five possible starters: Derby runners Revolutionary (third), Overanalyze (11th) and Palace Malice (12th), as well as a pair of fillies in Dreaming of Julia and Unlimited Budget.

Other possibles include Derby runner-up Golden Soul, Mylute (fifth in the Derby, third in the Preakness), Freedom Child, Power Broker and Code West.

McGaughey was disappointed he couldn't follow up his first Derby win with his first Preakness win, but said, "Winning the Derby was my lifetime dream and we won it. I would have loved to have won yesterday and taken it to the next level."

Lukas, meanwhile, won his first Triple Crown race since 2000, when Commendable won the Belmont. Since that win, Lukas was 0-for-31 in 22 Triple Crown races before Saturday.

"I still enjoy doing this so much," he said. "I don't wake up every day anymore trying to prove I can train a racehorse. When you're younger, you keep trying to prove yourself. I'm very comfortable with where I'm at."

Oxbow, ridden by Hall of Famer Gary Stevens, took the lead just after the start and led every step of the way. Orb never seemed to get into his long-striding running style after leaving from the inside No. 1 post and didn't make a serious run for the lead.

The winning time of 1:57.54 was the slowest since 1961, when Carry Back won in 1:57.60. No matter, it gave Stevens his third Preakness win to go along with his three Derby and three Belmonts wins. Not bad for a guy coming back after a seven-year retirement.

"I can't say that we thought we were going to win," the 50-year Hall of Fame rider said, "but we knew we had a chance to win."

The win was a big one for Calumet Farm, too, the iconic stable being revitalized by new owner Brad Kelley. The stable that produced Triple Crown champions Whirlaway in 1941 and Citation in 1948 won its first classic since Forward Pass took the Preakness in the 1968.

"They're all special because they were with a different client," Lukas said when asked to compare his Preakness wins. "The key is to get one every once in a while for the new guy. We've got a new guy in Brad Kelley at Calumet. And to know he was watching at home and put Calumet, who we all know that name, back on the front pages of the racing publications is very special."

$590M-plus Powerball: 1 winning ticket sold in Fla.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? It's all about the odds, and one lone ticket in Florida has beaten them all by matching each of the numbers drawn for the highest Powerball jackpot in history at an estimated $590.5 million, lottery officials said Sunday.

The single winner was sold at a supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla., according to Florida Lottery executive Cindy O'Connell. She told The Associated Press by telephone that more details would be released later.

"This would be the sixth Florida Powerball winner and right now, it's the sole winner of the largest ever Powerball jackpot," O'Connell told AP. "We're delighted right now that we have the sole winner."

She said Florida has had more Powerball winners than any other state.

The winner was not immediately identified publicly and O'Connell did not give any indication just hours after Saturday's drawing whether anyone had already stepped forward with that winning ticket.

With four out of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, lottery executives said earlier that someone was almost certain to win the game's highest jackpot, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars ? and that's after taxes.

Saturday night's winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11.

Estimates had earlier put the jackpot at around $600 million. But Powerball's online site said Sunday that the jackpot had reached an estimated $590.5 million.

Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery, initially confirmed that one Florida winning ticket had been sold. He told AP that following the Florida winner, the Powerball grand prize was being reset at an estimated jackpot of $40 million, or about $25.1 million cash value.

The chances of winning the prize were astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That's how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play. But lottery officials estimated that about 80 percent of those possible combinations had been purchased recently.

While the odds are low for any one individual or individuals, O'Connell said, the chance that one hits paydirt is what makes Powerball an "exciting game to play."

"There is just the chance that you will have the opportunity and Florida is a huge Powerball state. We have had more winners than any other state that participates in Powerball."

Such longshot odds didn't deter people across Powerball-playing states ? 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands ? from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday for their chance at striking it filthy rich.

Calls by AP to the Publix supermarket outlet in Florida where the winning ticket was sold were not answered Sunday.

Elsewhere, Rich said, lottery officials reported 33 winning tickets for a $1,000,000 prize each were sold around 17 states, led by six tickets in New York. He said lotteries reported 2 winning tickets each for the $2,000,000 PowerPlay, one in New York and the other in South Carolina.

Before the drawing, there was a rush for tickets around the country.

At a mini market in the heart of Los Angeles' Chinatown, employees broke the steady stream of customers into two lines: One for Powerball ticket buyers and one for everybody else. Some people appeared to be looking for a little karma.

"We've had two winners over $10 million here over the years, so people in the neighborhood think this is the lucky store," employee Gordon Chan said as he replenished a stack of lottery tickets on a counter.

The world's largest jackpot was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012. If $600 million, the jackpot would currently include a $376.9 million cash option.

Clyde Barrow, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, specializes in the gaming industry. He said one of the key factors behind the ticket-buying frenzy is the size of the jackpot ? people are interested in the easy investment.

"Even though the odds are very low, the investment is very small," he said. "Two dollars gets you a chance."

That may be why Ed McCuen has a Powerball habit that's as regular as clockwork. The 57-year-old electrical contractor from Savannah, Ga., buys one ticket a week, regardless of the possible loot. It's a habit he didn't alter Saturday.

"You've got one shot in a gazillion or whatever," McCuen said, tucking his ticket in his pocket as he left a local convenience store. "You can't win unless you buy a ticket. But whether you buy one or 10 or 20, it's insignificant."

Seema Sharma doesn't seem to think so. The newsstand employee in Manhattan's Penn Station purchased $80 worth of tickets for herself. She also was selling tickets all morning at a steady pace, instructing buyers where to stand if they wanted machine-picked tickets or to choose their own numbers.

"I work very hard ? too hard ? and I want to get the money so I can finally relax," she said. "You never know."

Findings suggest that blood-brain barrier integrity suffers days after ischemic stroke, leading to serious complications; repair of this protective barrier might prevent them

Tampa, FL (May 20, 2013) -- While the effects of acute stroke have been widely studied, brain damage during the subacute phase of stroke has been a neglected area of research. Now, a new study by the University of South Florida reports that within a week of a stroke caused by a blood clot in one side of the brain, the opposite side of the brain shows signs of microvascular injury.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, and increases the risk for dementia.

"Approximately 80 percent of strokes are ischemic strokes, in which the blood supply to the brain is restricted, causing a shortage of oxygen," said study lead author Svitlana Garbuzova-Davis, PhD, associate professor in the USF Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair. "Minutes after ischemic stroke, there are serious effects within the brain at both the molecular and cellular levels. One understudied aspect has been the effect of ischemic stroke on the competence of the blood-brain barrier and subsequent related events in remote brain areas."

Using a rat model, researchers at USF Health investigated the subacute phase of ischemic stroke and found deficits in the microvascular integrity in the brain hemisphere opposite to where the initial stroke injury occured.

The study was published in the May 10, 2013 issue of PLOS One.

The USF team found that "diachisis," a term used to describe certain brain deficits remote from primary insult, can occur during the subacute phase of ischemic stroke. The research discovered diachisis is closely related to a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, which separates circulating blood from brain tissue.

In the subacute phase of an ischemic stroke, when the stroke-induced disturbances in the brain occur in remote brain microvessels, several areas of the brain are affected by a variety of injuries, including neuronal swelling and diminished myelin in brain structures. The researchers suggest that recognizing the significance of microvascular damage could make the blood-brain barrier (BBB) a therapeutic "target" for future neuroprotective strategies for stroke patients.

The mechanisms of BBB permeability at different phases of stroke are poorly understood. While there have been investigations of BBB integrity and processes in ischemic stroke, the researchers said, most examinations have been limited to the phase immediately after stroke, known as acute stroke. Their interest was in determining microvascular integrity in the brain hemisphere opposite to an initial stroke injury at the subacute phase.

Accordingly, this study using rats with surgically-simulated strokes was designed to investigate the effect of ischemic stroke on the BBB in the subacute phase, and the effects of a compromised BBB upon various brain regions, some distant from the stroke site.

"The aim of this study was to characterize subacute diachisis in rats modeled with ischemic stroke," said co-author Cesar Borlongan, PhD, professor and vice chairman for research in the Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair and director of the USF Center for Aging and Brain Repair. "Our specific focus was on analyzing the condition of the BBB and the processes in the areas of the brain not directly affected by ischemia. BBB competence in subacute diachisis is uncertain and needed to be studied."

Their findings suggest that damage to the BBB, and subsequent vascular leakage as the BBB becomes more permeable, plays a major role in subacute diachisis.

The increasing BBB permeability hours after the simulated stroke, and finding that the BBB "remained open" seven days post-stroke, were significant findings, said Dr. Garbuzova-Davis, who is also a researcher in USF Center for Aging and Brain Repair. "Since increased BBB permeability is often associated with brain swelling, BBB leakage may be a serious and life-threatening complication of ischemic stroke."

Another significant aspect was the finding that autophagy -- a mechanism involving cell degradation of unnecessary or dysfunctional cellular components --plays a role in the subacute phase of ischemia. Study results showed that accumulation of numerous autophagosomes within endothelial cells in microvessels of both initially damaged and non-injured brain areas might be closely associated with BBB damage.

Autophagy is a complex but normal process usually aimed at "self-removing" damaged cell components to promote cell survival. It was unclear, however, whether the role of autophagy in subacute post-ischemia was promoting cell survival or cell death.

More than 30 percent of patients who survive strokes develop dementia within two years, the researchers noted.

"Although dementia is complex, vascular damage in post-stroke patients is a significant risk factor, depending on the severity, volume and site of the stroke," said study co-author Dr. Paul Sanberg, USF senior vice president for research and innovation. "Ischemic stroke might initiate neurodegenerative dementia, particularly in the aging population."

The researchers conclude that repair of the BBB following ischemic stroke could potentially prevent further degradation of surviving neurons.

"Recognizing that the BBB is a therapeutic target is important for developing neuroprotective strategies," they said.

In addition to researchers from USF, researchers from the Ribeirao Preto School of Medicine, University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil, contributed to the study.

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health (1RO1NS071956-01A1) and the James and Esther King Biomedical Research Program (1KG01-33966).

The Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair has strong and ongoing commitments to neurosurgical education both at the residency and fellowship level and also to providing ongoing educational efforts for practicing physicians. Multiple avenues of research under investigation in the department include conducting clinical research in the fields of complex spinal disorders, epilepsy, brain tumor treatment, and stroke care, among others. In the departmental laboratories, studies of spinal biomechanics, neurodegenerative disorders, and microsurgical techniques are also underway. We are trying to improve the treatments available for our neurosurgical patients and neurological patients throughout the world. http://health.usf.edu/medicine/neurosurgery/index.htm

1 winning ticket sold in Fla. on Powerball

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? A lottery official says 1 winning ticket has been sold in Florida for a record Powerball jackpot of more than $590 million.

Terry Rich, a lottery official in Iowa, confirmed the ticket matching all six numbers was sold in Florida. Rich told The Associated Press by telephone that details were expected to be announced later by Florida lottery officials about the actual ticket sold.

Powerball.com said the winner sold in Florida means the current estimated jackpot resets at $40 million or $25.1 million cash value.

The numbers drawn Saturday were: 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and Powerball 11.

With four of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, someone was almost certain to win the game's highest jackpot, though chances of winning remained astronomically low at 1 in 175.2 million.

Alcohol and Weight Loss: Lose Weight with Drinks? | Nutritionally Fit

?Alcohol and Weight Loss a Good?Mix??

Alcohol plays a big party of our culture; we drink as a way to have fun, let loose, be social or just to unwind after a tough day at work. So what?s wrong with having a few drinks at happy hour with your buddies after work or just planning a fun night out with the girls? Unfortunately like many unhealthy habits alcohol impacts weight. Research shows people who drink in moderation are less likely to be obese. But on the flip side, more than moderate drinking is linked to a greater risk of being overweight or?obese.

So what?s moderation?
For a woman 1 drink or less and 2 drinks or less for a man. One drink is considered 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounce bottle of beer, or 1.5 ounce shot of 80 proof distilled spirits (vodka, rum, gin, whiskey).?And by the way, abstaining during the week and downing 7?14 drinks over the weekend doesn?t count as moderate drinking.

Alcohol is metabolized differently than other foods and beverages. Therefore, these calories are converted into body fat and carried away on your body for storage.

Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram and offer NO nutritional value. These empty calories can only add to your waistline, leading to extra poundage.

Shall I save my calories for later?
Many drinkers know they?ll be have some drinks later and decide to ?bank? some calories by skipping meals. This is a bad idea and could result in a double whammy, because alcohol stimulates appetite. All those mouth-watering greasy fried foods on the appetizer menu sound awfully tempting. A little tipsy; you might just gobble up those yummy buffalo wings that you wouldn?t normally eat if you were?sober.

Worry about calories or carbs?
You might think that drinking liquor is more diet-friendly because it has no carbs; while wine and beer are not carb-free. Hard liquor contains around 100 calories per shot, so if you are going to mix liquor with anything opt for a diet or club soda. A 100-calorie shot of tequila turns into a 500 calorie margarita once it?s swirled into a sugary mixer, and for this very reason this is why most weight loss plans nix alcohol.
On the other hand, if you?d rather cut back than cut out alcohol, order drinks that will help you take in less alcohol, like a wine spritzer instead of wine. But before thinking about drinking ?light? beer it?s important to know the term ?light? only means the calorie reduction is mostly coming in the amount of carbohydrates. Generally, 12-ounce light beer contains about 100 calories, 5 grams of carbohydrates and a regular beer contains about 140 calories and 13 grams carbohydrates. It might surprise you to learn the difference in carbohydrates between a regular beer and a light beer is usually no more than the equivalent to 1/5th cup of cornflakes or 1/6th cup of apple juice, not exactly what one would call significant quantities of?food.

Bottom line
Let?s face it, alcohol can easily be the enemy when it comes to weight loss. It adds extra non-nutritive calories to your diet, encourages you to eat more and can add inches to your waistline. So if you?re watching your weight be smart about your alcohol choices and cut back whenever you?can.

National Secular Society - Census analysis shows Christianity in ...

According to census data analysis published yesterday, the number of British-born Christians is falling significantly, whilst the number of young Muslims is on the rise.

The figures suggest Christianity is in long-term decline in the UK; there are 5.3 million fewer British-born people describing themselves as Christians, representing a decline of 15% in just a decade, despite a growth in the overall population, calling into question the establishment of the Church of England.

Notably, the proportion of young people who describe themselves as even nominal Christians has dropped below half for the first time. Younger people also drove a shift away from religion altogether, with 6.4 million more people describing themselves as having no religion than 10 years earlier.

Whilst initial results from the 2011 census, published last year, showed that the total number of people in England and Wales who described themselves as Christian fell by 4.1 million, equaling a decline of 10%, this figure masked the fact that for British-born Christians the decline was even larger. This is because the figures had been bolstered by 1.2 million foreign born Christians, including Polish Christians and evangelical Christians from places such as Nigeria.

Keith Porteous Wood, executive director of the National Secular Society, commented: "Realistically, this trend is irreversible, and the number has dropped below critical mass for which there is no longer any justification for an established Church".

Whilst there has been a drop in those subscribing to the Christian faith, the number of Muslims in England and Wales has surged by 75% ? boosted by almost 600,000 more foreign born followers of the Islamic faith. While almost half of British Muslims are under the age of 25, almost a quarter of Christians are over 65. The average age of a British Muslim is just 25, not far off half that of a British Christian.

David Coleman, Professor of Demography at the University of Oxford, told The Times that the findings showed how Christianity was declining with each generation. "Each large age group, as time progresses, receives less inculcation into Christianity than its predecessor ten years earlier," he said.

Professor Coleman contrasted the decline of the Christian faith through the generations with what happens among Muslims. "We have a Muslim faith where most studies suggest adherence to Islam is not only transmitted through the generations but appears to get stronger," he said. "Indeed, there seems to be some evidence that the second generation Muslims in Britain are more Muslim than their parents."

A spokesman for the Church of England acknowledged: "One of the reasons may well be fewer people identifying as 'cultural Christians', that is those who have no active involvement with churches and who may previously have identified as Christian for cultural or historical reasons.

Terry Sanderson, President of the National Secular Society, said that the Church was well aware of its parlous position which is why it is so anxious to reinforce its position in education; "The early indoctrination of children is very important for the continuation of any religion," he said. "Christians know this and Muslims know it. The Church of England has far more primary schools under its control than secondary ones. It knows it needs to start the process earlier in order to keep people in the fold.

"Muslim clerics also know that early indoctrination is essential, which explains the widespread use of madrassas ? which, if we are honest, are little more than brainwashing institutions. There is little wonder that young Muslims are more religious than their parents with such heavy-handed, inescapable religious propaganda being forced on them."

Mr Sanderson said that the institutionalisation of secularism should now be an urgent priority for this government. "Within a few generations we are going to have a battle for supremacy between religions, and the non-religious are being further marginalised despite being a growing group. For the safety of us all we need to ensure that no religion can take control of the state again."

Key points

? In 2011, Christianity had the oldest age profile of the main religious groups.

? The number of Christians has fallen and this was largely for people aged under 60.

? The number of people with no religion has increased across all age groups, particularly for those aged 20 to 24 and the 40 to 44.

? In England and Wales, over nine in ten Christians (93%) were White and nine in ten (89%) were born in the UK, though the numbers have fallen since 2001.

? Nearly four in ten Muslims (38%) reported their ethnicity as Pakistani, a 371,000 increase (from 658,000 to over a million) since 2001. Nearly half of all Muslims were born in the UK.

? The majority of people with no religion were White (93%) and born in the UK (93%)

and these groups have increased since 2001.

? People with no religion had the highest proportion of people who were economically active, Christians and Muslims the lowest. Jewish people had the highest level of employment and Muslim people the highest level of unemployment.

? The main reason for Christians being economically inactive was retirement, for Muslims economic inactivity was mainly because they were students, or because they were looking after the home or family.

Popular Jailbreak Dev Releases Impressive Finance Application In ...

Filippo Bigarella, the popular jailbreak developer responsible for jailbreak tweaks such as?Springtomize, LivelyIcons, and PasswordPilot Pro, has just released a non-jailbreak application in the App Store. Called Balances, the new app allows iPhone and iPod touch owners to easily keep track of money that is owed and due. At the moment, Bigarella?s Balances can be downloaded free of charge in the App Store.

Balances is a simple, elegant app not dissimilar to Realmac Software?s popular to-do app, Clear. After launching the application, users touch either a ?-? or ?+? icon to add debt or credit, and can then input the amount, the name of the person involved, and a note beneath. All entries will show at the main screen of the application in either red or green, depending on their nature (as pictured above).

    Balances.

Once an entry has been dealt with, users can then remove it from the application?s main screen by swiping the item to the right. It?s as easy as that.

Balances is currently available to download in the App Store free of charge, and is optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch. Take a look at the brand new application now, and see what you think.
