China Takes Air Pollution More Seriously: $280 Billion Worth, Supposedly

We cover China's air pollution problems with depressing frequency on Green Car Reports, but the country's pollution problems have until now been far more than token schemes are able to deal with.

That could change over the next few years, as the Chinese government pledges to invest $283 billion to tackle air pollution.

According to state newspaper The China Daily (via CBC News), the sum will go towards measures aimed at a "visible improvement" in the near-opaque air in many Chinese cities.

Beijing, nearby Tianjin and the Hebei province will be the main benefactors of the investment, equivalent to more than the total economic output of Hong Kong.

Several Chinese cities and locales have launched their own initiatives to curb pollution in recent months. The Hebei province and its capital Shijiazhuang recently introduced a lottery to buy cars in order to reduce the number of vehicles on its roads, while Beijing implemented a pollution tax and pledged to remove the most polluting vehicles from its roads.

The moves follow several months earlier this year of the worst pollution ever recorded, and mounting public frustration with the country's poor air quality.

As a rapidly developing nation, China has poured decades of effort into economic growth, with environmental concerns taking a back seat. That's now changing as several major cities sit cloaked in smog, with water pollution also a major concern.

The problem now is whether that money will truly reach projects aimed at cutting down on pollution, China's local governments not known for their transparency with such issues. How much of China's huge investment benefits the smog-choked people in the streets remains to be seen...

La. city police arrested men under sodomy law

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? An East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office task force arrested at least 12 men since 2011 under a sodomy law invalidated a decade ago the U.S. Supreme Court, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The most recent arrest was July 18 when a man discussed or agreed to have sex with a male undercover agent, The Advocate (http://bit.ly/13mSpdc) reported. The task force was trying to deter sexual activities at the parish's public parks.

Although sex in public and sex solicitation for money are illegal in Louisiana, neither was part of these 12 cases, and most of the men were arrested after agreeing to have sex away from the park at a private residence, District Attorney Hillar Moore III told the newspaper.

"The sheriff's office's intentions are all good," Moore said. "But from what I've seen of these cases, legally, we found no criminal violation."

The Supreme Court ruled in 2003 that a Texas law against oral or anal sex was invalid. Louisiana was among nine states with such laws. Richard Leyoub, then attorney general, said the high court's ruling made Louisiana's law unenforceable.

The sheriff's office sent a statement Sunday to the newspaper saying it "should have taken a different approach" to worries about park safety, the newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/14pLnEv ).

"We will consult with others in the legislative and judicial branches to see what can be done to remove this law from the criminal code that each deputy receives and to also find alternative ways to deter sexual and lewd activity from our parks," it said.

Metro Councilman John Delgado said Sheriff Sid Gautreaux owed an apology to the men arrested and the entire parish.

Delgado said he will file public records requests to determine when the district attorney's office told the sheriff's office that the men targeted had committed no crime.

"You cannot simply hide behind not knowing that the law had been changed by the U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2003," Delgado said in email to the sheriff's office. "The sheriff's actions are a violation of the civil rights of these men under the 5th and 14th Amendments. Ignorance of the law is no excuse ... Doesn't your office tell people that all the time?"

Performance-Enhancing Drugs: Baseball Could Come Clean

    Published: Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 12:01 a.m.
    Last Modified: Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:00 p.m.

It was probably baseball fans who were first shocked and dismayed by the revelations that many of their hitting and pitching heroes were posting gaudy statistics with the aid of performance-enhancing drugs.

Baseball writers took up the cause this year. Faced with a list of Hall of Fame candidates that included several former players tainted by drug use, the writers failed to elect anyone for only the second time in 42 years. Those results were cheered by several members of the Hall.

Now, it is current players who are freely expressing their disgust with colleagues who used steroids and other substances to gain an unfair advantage on the field ? along with the honors and big contracts generated by their cheating ways.

All in all, the growing lack of tolerance for doping and for athletes who profit from it is a refreshing development ? for baseball and all sports. It may be just what's needed to clean up ? and level ? the playing fields.

The new focus of resentment is the Milwaukee Brewers' Ryan Braun, a former National League most valuable player, who ? after years of vehement denials ? agreed this week to a 65-game suspension imposed by Major League Baseball over evidence that he used drugs.

Fellow players were quick to condemn Braun.

"I thought this whole thing has been despicable on his part," Detroit pitcher Max Scherzer, an All-Star, told The Associated Press.

"When he did get caught, he never came clean. ... that's why the whole Braun situation, there is so much player outrage toward him."

Matt Kemp, a Los Angeles Dodger outfielder who finished second to Braun in the 2011 MVP voting, said: "We had conversations, and I considered him a friend. I don't think anybody likes to be lied to, and I feel like a lot of people have felt betrayed."

    DEALS AND GUILT

Joe Girardi, New York Yankees manager and a former major-league catcher, said of Braun's decision: "You don't accept a deal unless you're guilty."

"It's another black eye for our game," said Girardi. "I know this game is very resilient, and there's been a lot of scandals over the years, but you get tired of it."

Girardi might be gearing up to handle his own team's latest scandal: Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees third baseman and three-time American League MVP, is reported to be among more than a dozen players targeted for suspension resulting from an investigation of a Florida anti-aging clinic.

If and when the additional penalties are announced, the recipients won't get any sympathy from Los Angeles Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson. "They're lying to the fans," Wilson told The AP. "They're lying to their teammates. They're lying to their GMs, their owners, and they're going to get caught."

In the past, lying wasn't necessary. For years, baseball players and other athletes were reluctant to identify or publicly criticize either teammates or competitors suspected of using illegal substances.

    SUSPICIONS

Professional athletes ? even more than managers, coaches and others closely involved with teams and sports ? have to be suspicious when a colleague suddenly develops huge muscles, along with new ability to hit monster home runs, throw faster fastballs or bounce back from serious injury. Any of those can result from using steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.

Curt Schilling, a former pitcher and now an ESPN commentator, addressed that players' code of silence in January after the baseball writers' Hall of Fame shutout.

"I think as a player, a group, this is one of the first times that we've been publicly called out," Schilling said. "I think it's fitting. ... If there was ever a ballot and a year to make a statement about what we didn't do as players ? which is, we didn't actively push to get the game clean ? this is it."

Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt agreed: "Curt Schilling made a good point; everyone was guilty. Either you used PEDs, or you did nothing to stop their use."

Apparently, that may no longer be the case. Players, along with fans, sportswriters and others, appear ready to help clean up the game. That's good for baseball, and for all sports.

Make Smoother, Tastier, Less Icy Sorbet with Corn Syrup

Make Smoother, Tastier, Less Icy Sorbet with Corn Syrup

Corn Syrup may be looked down on when it comes to processed food, but the team at Serious Eats discovered at least one application where using it at home really does improve your food: In homemade sorbet.

If it's as hot where you are as it is here, a little sorbet can go a long way to beat the heat. However, the best sorbet is smooth, not icy, and only a little sweet?the fruit flavor should shine through. Well, Max Falkowitz at Serious Eats explains why corn syrup?and other "invert sugars"?are better in the many dessert recipes that call for them. He also goes out of his way to make sure we understand the difference between corn syrup you can buy at the store and the high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) that you should avoid whenever possible.

He goes on to point out that the viscous nature of a normal corn syrup, and the fact that it's actually less sweet than table sugar, make it ideal for sorbet. It also resists crystallization. Just to put the ingredient to the test, he made four batches of lemon sorbet, each with different amounts of corn syrup, from his normal recipe to none at all (replacing it with sugar), and then did a blind taste test to determine the better tasting treat:

The results were clear: even a small amount of corn syrup drastically improved a sorbet's texture. While the sugar-based sorbets won out on flavor, their texture suffered. The all-sugar sorbet sucked eggs: dry, icy, clumpy, impossible to scoop. A small amount of corn syrup added substantial creaminess, and greater amounts improved texture even more.

How much corn syrup to add is a question of personal taste. I like the super-dense, super-smooth, ice cream-like texture of my all corn syrup sorbet, though it takes a good 12 hours in the freezer to harden and it melts quickly. Others preferred the mostly corn syrup version, which wasn't quite as smooth, but close. There's no right or wrong answer here, except to dismiss corn syrup out of hand.

He does note there are some cons to using corn syrup, namely that table sugar tastes sweeter, and corn syrup can have an off-taste compared to table sugar. It also adds volume, something that table sugar doesn't, so you need to account for that in your recipe. At the end of the day, he suggests you trust your own tastes and experiment freely. After all, there are worse ways to spend a summer afternoon than making sorbet.

Android 4.3 source reveals support for 4K resolution

We've seen Android run on anything from low-resolution smartwatches to high-PPI phones and tablets, including the new 1920 x 1200-pixel Nexus 7 Google launched earlier this week. To make this possible, the mobile OS supports a number of pixel densities for app content -- from 120PPI (LDPI / Low DPI) to 480PPI (XXHDPI / Extra Extra High DPI). Close examination of the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) source code reveals the addition of a 640PPI (XXXHDPI / Extra Extra Extra High DPI) pixel density, which -- according to the comments in the code -- is intended for 4K televisions. Does this mean we'll begin to see Android devices with 640PPI Ultra HD displays? Perhaps, but considering 480PPI is overkill on handsets, this is most likely designed to make image assets and fonts, such as the Google TV UI, readable on 4K screens when viewed from a distance.

The New South Africa Bans a Major Film Festival Entry as Protests Mount

Durban, South Africa: It was Nelson Mandela?s birthday, and the international day of service in his honor. The reports were that the man they call Madiba was recovering, according to upbeat accounts from his wife of 15 years and daughter Zindzi from his marriage to Winnie.

Happily, on that night, it was also a time of celebration as film fans packed into the annual opening of the film festival in Durban.

Screen Shot 2013-07-23 at 8.36.48 AM

For 34 years, the Durban International Film Festival? (DIFF) has brought a world of cinema to the East coast of South Africa with an impressive range of films, filmmakers and related events. The screenings are often packed with over 150 films or more on display.

The Festival is organized by the Center for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, up on the big hill overlooking Durban. In recent years, its setting went from the academic to the commercial, from a mountain to a beach, with the opening this year, once again, based in cinemas at the Suncoast casino where it is attended by a multi-racial, and multi-generational crowd. For details on this year?s program, visit their website at http://www.durbanfilmfest.co.za.

There was a lot of buzz about the opening feature film, Of Good Report. ?Made by black South African filmmaker Jahmil XT Qubeka, (X.T. in some publications). The Mail and Guardian called it a ?powerful and perfect piece about an obsessive predator.?

It was a scheduled for its world premiere at Durban. It is made in African languages?in Xhosa and Sotho with English subtitles.? The festival catalogue calls it a ?hypnotic journey inside the mind of a mentally troubled man? that falls in love with one of his students, sensational perhaps but also all too common in township schools.

?It?s a starkly gripping piece of work,? writes Shaun De Waal in the M&G. ?Qubeka has a very punchy storytelling style.?

Neither the director nor the writers who praised it were aware of how the government?s Film and Publication Board would punch back.

The screening was set to follow one of those endless thank you rituals that precede events that have to hustle for funding like this one did from government, private companies and the university, among many others.? The Festival enjoys government support at the local, provincial and national level. It is one of the country?s leading arts events

When show time arrived, the audience settled in to watch the opening movie.

But, then, to everyone?s surprise, a statement instead of a film, flashed on the large screen.

It was an excerpt from a letter, just received that morning, from the? government body that ?classifies? films. (In the US, an industry organ, the Motion Picture Association (MPAA) handles movie ratings).

    It read,

?This film has been refused classification by the Film and Publication Board, in terms of the Film and Publications Act of 1996, unfortunately we may not legally screen the film, Of Good Report, as doing so would constitute a criminal offence.?

It was later explained that said the movie could not be classified or shown because it had been found to feature child pornography, which is prohibited by law, along with movies glorifying war or promoting racism and hatred.

The manager of the film festival, Peter Machen, explained:

?Unfortunately, the film and publication board has refused to allow the release of?Of Good Report. According to their communication to the festival, the film contains a scene which constitutes child pornography and we are unable to legally show the film. I am very sorry about this. Out of respect for the director of the film, we will not be showing an alternative film tonight.?

His remarks can be viewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgLb8dcSyVA

?We chose the film because it was challenging, powerful and artistically successful, and particularly because it was such a strong expression of an individual voice,? adding, ?it presents a story of a very real and troubling social problem of rampant abuse of position in our country.?

The Board demanded all copies be sent to them or the police to be destroyed. Their legalistic letter was read, in part, to the audience. You can watch that here: http://youtu.be/JcSAmGpTqKs

Moreover the officials issuing the threats based on a unanimous decision admitted the movie had not even been screened in its entirety. They stopped the screening, they said, after twenty-seven + minutes and then issued their edict. ?(Somehow 27 seemed a symbolic number since that was also the number of years Mandela had been jailed.)

    The movie had been banned!

The cast and crew didn?t know about this in advance and were as shocked as the audience.? Many saw this as a replay of the Christian nationalist uber-moralism of the apartheid years.

The Festival then invited the audience to take part in a discussion.

?We decided to go ahead with this evening program, despite not being able to screen the film, ? said Professor Cheryl Potgieter, Vice-Chancellor of humanities and who teaches about sexuality in film, ?as we felt the directors and producers had the right to be heard.?

Another representative of the festival, Kwazi Ngubane, called the ban an ?injustice and an insult? because it deals with issues that the country faces.

Then, an angry reaction was heard, not about pornography, but the Board?s action. (Ironically, an executive of a prominent local film company told me that the movie could have been shown without a classification at a film festival because of an exemption in the law. But, he added, once you go to the Board, you give them power over the work?s exhibition.)

The director put tape on his mouth, and held up what was said to be a shredded passport, and didn?t say a word.? His wife, Lwazi Manzi, an emergency room doctor, spoke instead, insisting the film was not pornographic in any way. She said it deals with issues that the public has to confront even if it makes the audience or board uncomfortable.

?Just because they (the FPB) don?t want to see it, does not mean it does not happen?I am very proud of my husband, and the cast and crew. This is a pivotal day in the history of film in our country, one which will resonate in history.?

She movingly described the cases of sexual abuse that she sees every day, many of under-age kids by older men.

She is right to be concerned:? sexual violence and child abuse is pervasive in South Africa. Clinical Psychology Review examined 65 studies from 22 countries. Using the available data, the highest prevalence rate of child sexual abuse geographically was found in Africa (34.4%), primarily because of high rates in South Africa.

I was disappointed that there were not more films on the subject on the program.

A few days later, the director broke his silence on the front page of the Sunday Times, the country?s newspaper with the highest circulation. He described his movie as the Little Red Riding Hood story ?from the wolf?s perspective.?

He also railed at the ban, asking, ?in this day and age, seriously? The child porn thing smacks of the greatest ignorance, incompetence and downright stupidity. How do you come up with that kind of charge from viewing this film.? (A more recent interview appears in Variety http://variety.com/2013/film/news/south-africa-banned-film-director-jahmil-qubeka-speaks-out-1200566361/)

Others in the cast and crew, including its young stars, spoke eloquently about their disappointment and dismay over the decision. The 23 year old actress who plays a the female student insisted there was ?no graphic sex.?? She was almost in tears, and still shaken when I spoke to her at a festival event later in the evening.

Many members of the audience were outraged, calling for a petition, and ?protest. They also asked on local politicians at the event to speak out. The decision touched off a storm of critical media attention throughout South Africa..

The film is has also been accepted for screening at prominent film festivals worldwide, including the prestigious Toronto Film Festival. The furor over the banning has already become news worldwide. South Africa?s The Independent reports, ?artists and filmmakers around the world are calling for the unbanning.?

South African filmmakers were meeting at the film festival to organize a united response which may include picketing the board.

These protests are likely to continue.

In one sense, this has become the most provocative film never shown, the first film to be banned since South Africa won its freedom in 1994. Director Qubeka told the Sunday Times, ?overnight, this has changed my life?the support I am getting overseas is ridiculous.

The Festival and the producers are appealing a decision that seemed to be premised on a law built around the idea that if you show or even hint at some behavior, you are encouraging it.

One woman in the audience said the government agency mistook ?a victim of sexual abuse with a subject of sexual attraction.?

The Mercury newspaper reported that the ?Film and Publication Board has a special project focusing on what it considers to be child pornography.?? Its website (http://fpb.org.za/) seeks the public, rather vaguely, to report ?what they might consider child pornography.?

Writing in Variety, my colleague on the film project I am working on, South Africa?s top film publicist, Dezi Rorich, reported the board?s response: ?The fact that the committee refused classification does not mean that it does not have artistic merit. It is implementing legislation,?

Yoliswa Makhasi, CEO of the Film and Publication Board, said. ?The decision of the classification committee is informed by the Film and Publications Act, and the committee is required by law to refuse classification (if the film contravenes that law). It is merely implementing the legislation.?

Makhasi?added,??The minute there is any element of child pornography, as defined in the Act, the committee has to stop viewing.??It was around 28 minutes into the film when the committee made its decision.?

This prompted producer Mike Mills to retort, ?this is a problem because it means they did not bother to see the rest of the film. You cannot take a feature film and sum it up in one scene. The overall narrative must be taken into account.?

The film?s producer, Mike Auret, a lawyer, said he would take the issue to the Constitutional Court.? ?It is not the function of state to moralize?if the committee was acting within a law of South Africa, that law is unconstitutional,? he insisted angrily.

Violations of the Film Board?s codes are subject to penalties of up to ten years in jail. The Board did say they would not recommend prosecution Of Good Report until all appeals are decided. They issued a statement Monday warning than anyone with copies of the film will be arrested.

    Antoinette Engel wrote on Africaisacountry.com:

?I was disappointed, to say the least, because the festival sent the film to the Film and Publication Board on 10 July and when it wasn?t cleared they tried to bring an urgent application to the board earlier that day (18 July) but this didn?t work. With so short a time for the red tape that must involve such classifications, DIFF could have done more.

At festivals like the Berlinale pre-screenings are commonplace a day or two before the official opening for press.?

Another problem, say the producers, is the Film Board is not part of the Arts & Culture Ministry that might have been more supportive, but anchored in Home Affairs department that polices immigration and is primarily focused on law enforcement.

In the apartheid days, the regime prohibited many films like ?Black Beauty,? Monty Python?s ?Life of Brian? and ?Cry Freedom.?

Some years back, my documentary Plunder on the financial crisis was shown at the last minute at a Johannesburg conference at Witwatersrand University on investigative reporting.

The response was very positive?but a year later, when I recounted my experience at a movie industry reception in South Africa, a member of the classification board who was there, overheard me and demanded to know if I had submitted the film in advance to their board.

    Busted!

Frankly, I didn?t know that you needed government permission for non-commercial screenings in a university. I was told you most certainly do, and that I was in violation of some code.

I dismissed her comment at the time as bizarre bureaucratic overreach, but after the banning at the festival I can see how much power this Orwellian body wields.

(AP) ? Anthony Weiner found himself caught in another sexting scandal Tuesday like the one that destroyed his congressional career, but stood side-by-side with his wife to say he won't drop out of the race for mayor of New York.

"This is entirely behind me," Weiner said at an evening news conference, hours after the gossip website The Dirty posted X-rated text messages and a crotch shot that it said the former congressman exchanged with a woman after he left office.

Weiner admitted sending a woman sexually explicit photos and messages and acknowledged the activity took place as recently as last summer, more than a year after he resigned from the House in disgrace for the same sort of behavior with at least a half-dozen women.

But with his wife, Huma Abedin, smiling shyly an arm's length away from him, he said: "I want to bring my vision to the people of the city of New York. I hope they are willing to still continue to give me a second chance."

Weiner then turned the microphone over to his wife, who did not appear with him at the June 2011 news conference when he stepped down from Congress over a scandal that began with a Twitter photo of his bulging underpants.

This time, Abedin reaffirmed her support for her husband and said the sexting matter is "between us."

"I love him, I have forgiven him, I believe in him, and as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward," said Abedin, a longtime adviser to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Abedin said her husband had made some "horrible mistakes both before he resigned from Congress and after" but insisted the two of them discussed "all of this" before he jumped into the mayor's race in May.

On Tuesday, Harper's Bazaar released an excerpt from a piece Abedin wrote explaining that although she doesn't like the limelight, she decided to campaign for him because he's "a better man" now.

The latest disclosures could severely test voters' willingness to forgive Weiner, who has said he spent his two years in political exile since the scandal trying to make things right with his wife and earn redemption.

The New York Times and three of his rivals for mayor called on him to drop out of the race.

The 48-year-old Democrat has been near the top of most polls since his late entry into the campaign.

"I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out and today they have," said Weiner, who added that he was surprised that more had not previously surfaced.

After the news conference, Weiner went directly to a mayoral forum on gay men's issues and was warmly received.

The woman with whom he exchanged the messages was not identified by The Dirty. She told the website that she was 22 when she began chatting with Weiner on a social networking site. She said their online relationship began in July 2012 and lasted six months.

She said that Weiner used the alias "Carlos Danger" for their exchanges but that she knew she was talking to the former congressman.

The exchanges posted on The Dirty consist of sexually explicit fantasizing about various sex acts. At one point, the man reported to be Weiner wrote, "I'm deeply flawed."

The woman said Weiner promised to help her get a job at the political website Politico and suggested meeting in a Chicago condo for a tryst.

The woman said she and Weiner also exchanged nude photos of themselves and engaged in phone sex. The Dirty ran a pixelated photo of what it said were Weiner's genitals.

"This was a bad situation for me because I really admired him. Even post scandal, I thought he was misunderstood. Until I got to know him. I thought I loved him. Pretty pathetic," the woman was quoted as telling the website.

She said he later asked her to destroy the evidence of their chats. She insisted that she never had sex with Weiner or received any payment from him.

The woman said her relationship with Weiner "fizzled" in November 2012. She said she last heard from him this past April, when his intention to run for mayor was revealed in a New York Times Magazine profile.

Weiner said that not every allegation made by the woman was true but that he was not going to dispute specific claims. The lawyer for The Dirty's founder, Nik Ritchie, said his client was ill and would not comment Tuesday.

Weiner said his last sexting exchange happened "sometime last summer, I think," after he and his wife sat down for a glowing People magazine profile in which they said their troubles were behind them.

Abedin, who was pregnant when the original sexting scandal broke and gave birth months later, has played a large and visible role in his mayoral campaign.

Two weekends ago, she walked hand-in-hand with Weiner as they talked to voters on a Harlem street.

In an editorial posted online Tuesday, the New York Times urged Weiner to drop out of the race, saying Weiner "should take his marital troubles and personal compulsions out of the public eye, away from cameras, off the Web and out of the race for mayor of New York City."

Three of his rivals for mayor ? Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former City Councilman Sal Albanese, both Democrats, and billionaire John Catsimatidis, a Republican ? also called on Weiner to quit the race.

"Enough is enough," de Blasio said. "The sideshows of this election have gotten in the way of the debate we should be having about the future of this city."

Another mayoral hopeful, city Comptroller John Liu, stopped short of calling for Weiner to bow out, but suggested his "propensity for pornographic selfies is a valid issue for voters."

The other leading Democratic candidates, including City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and former City Comptroller Bill Thompson, did not immediately comment.

The disclosure suddenly puts Weiner's indiscretions, judgment and candor back in the forefront of his campaign, political analysts said.

"It makes it tougher to believe this is behind him," said Democratic former state Assemblyman Michael Benjamin, now a political consultant.

Some voters have said they felt Weiner had atoned for his past and were willing to give him a second chance. But a third chance, for misbehavior that occurred after his resignation?

"I think he had a chance to redeem himself and if he did it twice, he really betrayed the public's trust again," said Jeremy Green, a New Yorker. "I think he's past the point of no return for New Yorkers."

The Big Stink: D.C.'s Corpse Flower Put On A Show

In addition to its smell, the color of the corpse flower is meant to imitate that of rotting flesh and raw meat.

      Heather Rousseau/NPR

The line to see the thing that was supposed to smell like rotting flesh wrapped around the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C., on Monday night. Most folks who braved the heat and hourlong wait weren't greeted with the overwhelming stench of death, but rather the smell of sweat and intense, intense humidity.

Kyle Wallick, a botanist with the gardens, said that the titan arum, known colloquially as the corpse flower, began emitting its signature odor on Sunday evening after the gardens closed. By Monday morning, though, the smell was gone.

Wallick says the smell, which he described as a "foul odor ? sort of the odor you get from a decaying carcass, roadkill if you will, or that odor you see on the bottom of a dumpster after a hot summer day," comes and goes in waves over the course of one to two days.

"It takes a lot of energy for the plant to produce the smell, so it puts it on reserve during the day, and will put out full strength later in the evening when the pollinators are available to it," he says. (It's not the only species to give off rank smells. The International Business Times has compiled a list of some other "awful-smelling organisms.")

The smell resembles dead or decaying flesh, and it attracts a carrion beetle that normally likes to lay its eggs on the rotting corpses of dead mammals. In this case, though the beetles act like pollinators as they travel from flower to flower.

"It's a very strange evolutionary strategy to invest 10 years to make a flower that only last one or two days," says Alice Chen, a plant biologist who works at a law firm in Washington. She went to see the corpse flower with her daughter Adie.

    Heather Rousseau/NPR

The titan arum is native to the tropical rain forests of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was first discovered in 1878, and Wallick says there have been only 68 occurrences of the plant flowering in the United States since then. That's because the plants don't bloom on a regular cycle ? the length of time between blooms ranges from a few years to a few decades.

The corpse flower that's on display at the U.S. Botanic Garden at the base of Capitol Hill in Washington is "a fairly young plant," Wallick says. It's been growing since 2006, and this is the first time it's in bloom. The 8-foot-tall plant weighs in at around 250 pounds.

Alice Chen, a plant biologist who works at a law firm in Washington, was visiting the garden with her daughter Adie.

Edna Bargan waited in line for 45 minutes to see the flower on Monday night. "I just had to be here, despite the long lines," she says.

"It's a very strange evolutionary strategy to invest 10 years to make a flower that only lasts one or two days," she says. "That's very unusual in the plant kingdom."

Its method of pollination, she said, is equally unusual. "These pollinators that [titan arum] uses are not traditional pollinators ? traditionally, they are decomposers that look for dead sources of meat. So for the plant to use these decomposers as pollinators is a very unique and sort of different ecological role for these insects."

Edna Bargan, who called the plant majestic and exotic, waited in line for 45 minutes to see it Monday night.

"I just had to be here, despite the long lines," she says. "I'm very, very excited to see it. I'm all sweaty, but it's worth it. It's absolutely worth it. It's actually an ugly flower. But it's wonderful."

Unity 4.2 Brings Support for Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry 10

Today, Unity officially announced the availability of version 4.2 of their development platform, one that arrives with support for more mobile operating systems than before.

As part of the new release, Unity is available on Microsoft?s Windows Phone 8 operating system, as well as on the BlackBerry 10 platform, the company unveiled.

?That?s right, we?ve doubled the number of mobile platforms Unity supports! Now it?s up to you guys to create new games and port existing titles to these platforms so even more people can benefit from your creative talents,? Unity notes in a recent blog post.

?In Unity 4.2, all users of the free version of Unity can publish to any mobile platform they wish, be it Windows Phone 8, Windows Store, iOS, Android or BlackBerry 10 without it costing a dime.?

At the same time, the company announced that the Windows Store Pro deployment option is available with support for Windows Phone 8 to all Unity Pro users for free.

?Plus, Unity Pro users can benefit from advanced Unity features when deploying their iOS, Android or BlackBerry 10 projects by purchasing Unity iOS Pro, Android Pro or BlackBerry 10 Pro Add-On products from the Unity Store,? the company announced.

A series of other changes were included in the new release as well, some of which were aimed at Android and iOS devices, such as the enabled Deferred Lighting and OpenGL ES 3.0 support for Android.

The new Unity 4.2 also comes with support for Android Library Projects (no compilation support, so the libraries have to be pre-compiled), as well as with AndroidJavaProxy ? support for implementing Java interfaces in C#.

Furthermore, as part of the new release, the editor can update the Android SDK if it does not match the required dependencies. There is also a CrashReporter API for crash detection added for the iOS platform.

The editor has been modified to show a warning when RenderTexture usage is not optimal for tile-based or multi-GPU systems when the mobile graphics emulation mode is enabled.

2012 Justice Party VP Candidate Running for California Governor as Green

From Green Party Watch, July 19, 2013:

Los Angeles author and activist vies for Governor?s office as Green Party candidate

LOS ANGELES, CA ? Nationally renowned author Luis J. Rodriguez has announced his intention in running for California Governor under the Green Party in 2014. The Green Party of California will nominate its June 2014 Gubernatorial candidate this November at its bi-annual statewide General Assembly. As a newly registered Green Party member of California and the 2012 Vice-Presidential Nominee for the Justice Party alongside running-mate and former mayor of Salt Lake City Rocky Anderson, Luis?s plan is for a campaign aimed at the wellbeing of all Californians ? for meaningful and livable jobs; education/training into the new digitally driven technology; green, clean and healthy neighborhoods for everyone; and peace and safety through restorative, transformative and healing urban peace models.

?I?m for a vision of a new California ? one that takes care of all its hard working residents, including those that now find themselves without work and even homes, and that strives for the long-range sustainability that is possible in the wealthiest and most resourceful state in the country,? says Mr. Rodriguez. ?I am inviting all progressives, labor leaders, community organizers, and, of course, regular folk ? across the political spectrum ? to unite around a broad movement for a California worthy of each of us. We need to make sure everyone is included in the immense possibilities inherent in people?s imaginations, in their labor, in the technology, and with respectful relationship to our bountiful earth.?

Luis J. Rodriguez is author of 15 books in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and children?s literature. His most well known work, ?Always Running, La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A.,? has been called one of the most checked out books in libraries and schools ? and perhaps the most stolen. The book has also been named one of the 100 most censored books in the U.S. and was the center of controversy in some California school districts. Yet Luis has received hundreds of letters from youth over the past twenty years addressing how the book inspires and changes young peoples? lives.

For more than forty years Luis has also worked in gang peace, neighborhood arts, youth development, a labor organizer, a journalist, and in social justice. He has spent 33 years visiting prisons ? including Chino, Lancaster, San Quentin, Soledad, and Folsom ? and juvenile facilities throughout the state and across the U.S. He has also talked in public and private schools, colleges, universities, libraries, conferences, and urban and rural poor communities. He has 20 years as a Native Mexican/Native American healer working mostly with troubled youth, addicts, formerly incarcerated, battered women, and others.

Along with his wife Trini and others, Luis helped create the nonprofit Tia Chucha?s Centro Cultural & Bookstore in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. This unique space includes workshops and performances in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, writing, indigenous cosmology, Open Mics, author readings, film nights, community dialogues, a youth empowerment project, a mural collective, and more ? as well as the only annual outdoor literacy festival in the San Fernando Valley: ?Celebrating Words: Written, Performed & Sung.? And he?s founder/editor of the award-winning small press, Tia Chucha Press, which in 25 years has published more than 50 books of poetry, chapbooks, an art book, and a CD.
