(AP) ? Port clerks returned to work Wednesday, jubilant in the knowledge that an eight-day strike that paralyzed the nation's busiest shipping complex had won them ? at least for now ? guarantees that their jobs won't be outsourced to China, Arizona or other places.

The 600 clerical workers at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union won only modest increases in wage and pension benefits over the life of a new four-year contract.

But more importantly, said union spokesman Craig Merrilees, they extracted promises from management that, as workers retire or leave the ports during the next four years, no more than 14 jobs will be outsourced. Companies also must continue to provide workers to fill in for vacationing employees and those who take extended absences, but don't have to cover for short-term illnesses or bereavement leave.

"The key issue in this whole strike was the outsourcing of good jobs, and they won protections against outsourcing abuses," Merrilees said.

He acknowledged that the issue would likely be front and center in negotiations when the new contract expires in 2016.

Shippers denied outsourcing jobs, but strikers insisted they had proof.

Trinnie Thompson, a union shop steward, said workers have seen invoices and emails showing some of their responsibilities being usurped by people in offices in Costa Rica, Shanghai, Colorado and Arizona.

"They take a job here in California where the average salary is $65,000 and are paying only $30,000 in a state like Arizona," she said.

The clerks handle such tasks as filing invoices and billing notices, arranging dock visits by customs inspectors, and ensuring that cargo moves off the dock quickly and gets where it's supposed to go.

The increasing computerization of such tasks, which allows them to be performed in cities far from the ocean, makes the clerks especially vulnerable, say labor experts.

"These are fairly complicated jobs, you can't just hire anybody to do them, but nevertheless they can be done from other places," said Nelson Lichtenstein, director of the Center for the Study of Work Labor and Democracy at the University of California, Santa Barbara, said Wednesday.

Moving such jobs overseas or to states that pay less, and where unionization is not as strong, is something that has been a trend in the United States for decades, he said, giving as an example large company customer call centers that have been relocated to India.

"What's remarkable about this is that the union struck, they shut down the ports and they won," he said, adding it showed what the strong labor movement that still exists in the shipping industry is capable of accomplishing.

The clerks make average salaries of $41 an hour, or about $87,000 a year. With overtime and generous benefits, they receive average annual compensation of $165,000 that will rise to about $195,000 if the proposed contract is ratified.

They also receive pensions and 11 weeks of time off. Their health insurance is fully paid and includes zero doctor co-payments, giving them among the best salary and benefits packages of any blue-collar workers.

The deal, reached late Tuesday night, must still be ratified by union membership, but both sides expect that to happen in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, gates reopened at the ports and thousands of workers got busy unloading everything from cars to clothing, and television sets to computers from ships that had been idling in the ocean. Goods were placed on trains and trucks, to be delivered across the country.

"It's going to take a few days, maybe a week or two to get back to normal," said Long Beach port spokesman Art Wong.

During negotiations, shippers fought vigorously against the job guarantees, maintaining that would force them to keep people on the payroll that weren't needed.

Ultimately, they compromised to end the devastating strike that shut down 10 of the 14 terminals at the ports and cost the region billions of dollars.

"At the end of the day, it was important to reach compromise to get people back to work, and we agree the deal will extend growth at the ports," said Steve Getzug, a spokesman for the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Employers Association, which represented the shipping companies.

In just a week, the strike had begun to create concerns there would be shortages of everything from retail merchandise needed for next month's post-holiday sales to repair parts for Redbox video kiosks.

Christmas merchandise had already arrived before the strike began.

During the walkout, officials estimated roughly $760 million worth of cargo a day failed to move through the ports. Twenty ships headed to other ports in California and Mexico, while some simply didn't sail from their home ports. Still others idled at sea.

Clerical workers walked out Nov. 27 after working without a contract for 30 months.

Although the strikers numbered only about 450, thousands of dockworkers represented by a sister union refused to cross the picket lines, stalling work at the complex that handles 44 percent of all container traffic that arrives in the U.S. by sea.

The new contract calls for a $1 an hour raise immediately and another $1 an hour bump next year, with raises in the contract's third and fourth years still to be determined. Employees will also receive $4,000 lump sum payments for the 30 months they worked without a contract.

Their pension benefits will increase slightly, and their vacation and health benefits will remain unchanged.

When their contract expires in 2016, Merrilees said, they should expect to face the outsourcing issue again.

"This problem is one that's rampant across the country," he said. "It's great that port workers were able to get this problem in these ports subject to more controls, but meanwhile the impacts of outsourcing are still being felt across the country."

Asia stocks rise on improved China manufacturing

(AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Monday after surveys showed a recovery in China's manufacturing.

HSBC's Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 50.5 in November on a 100-point scale on which numbers above 50 indicate activity is expanding. It was the first expansion in 13 months. The reading in October was 49.5.

That comes on top of the release Saturday of a state-sanctioned survey, the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing's monthly Purchasing Managers' Index, which showed an improvement to 50.6 from 50.2 in October.

The PMI index measures overall manufacturing activity by surveying numerous indicators including orders, employment and actual production.

The Chinese numbers are rare good news for the world economy, which has slowed as Europe's chronic debt crisis worsened and the American economy stagnated.

"This confirms that Chinese economy continues to recover gradually," said Hongbin Qu, chief economist for China research at HSBC.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.7 percent to 9,508.26, its first time above 9,500 in seven months. Stocks in Tokyo got an added boost from the yen's recent weakness against the dollar and the euro.

South Korea's Kospi gained 0.3 percent to 1,938.93. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia rose. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.1 percent at 22,043.52.

Investors continued to abandon mainland Chinese stocks. The Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.3 percent to 1,974.62. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 0.6 percent to 748.40.

"A lot of investors are sitting on the sidelines until a big stimulus project from the government or big, encouraging economic numbers come out. Before that happens, they are just waiting," said Jackson Wong, vice president at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong.

Among individual stocks, Australia's Woodside Petroleum rose 1.1 percent after announcing an Australian dollars 670.04 million ($696 million) deal on a major gas prospect off the coast of Israel.

The company has agreed to commercial terms for the acquisition of two exploration licenses in the Leviathan gas field in the Mediterranean Sea.

The company will be the operator of any liquefied natural gas development of the Leviathan gas field. The deal with the U.S.-based firm Noble Energy gives Woodside a 30 percent interest in Leviathan.

On Friday, U.S. stocks ended nearly flat amid ongoing budget negotiations in Washington. The Dow Jones industrial average rose less than 0.1 percent to close at 13,025.58. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose marginally to close at 1,416.18. The Nasdaq composite fell nearly 0.1 percent to 3,010.24.

Wall Street stocks have fluctuated between gains and losses in recent days as investors followed the latest headlines from budget negotiations. Lawmakers need to reach a deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff ? a package of tax increases and government spending cuts that will automatically take effect in 2013 unless lawmakers take action. Economists have warned that the package's high cost could throw the U.S. back into recession.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was up 24 cents to $89.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 84 cents to close at $88.91 in New York on Friday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3035 from $1.3002 Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 82.40 yen from 82.50 yen.

PFT: Forte says ankle 'feeling pretty good'

Pittsburgh Steelers' Brett Keisel (99) sacks Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden (3) during the fourth quarter of their NFL football game in ClevelandReuters

It?s Christmas tree night at the Florio household.? Which means that I?ll be risking injury as I take an axe out to the back 40 and make like Jack Del Rio on the choicest trunk of pine.

Actually, the tree is in a box.? But I could still get injured; those fake needles are quite pointy.

Speaking of injuries, here?s our weekly look at the guys who are banged up for Sunday?s games.? Which I most likely won?t get injured while typing.

Cardinals at Jets

Three Arizona wideouts are questionable, but none are named Larry or Fitzgerald.? Andre Roberts looks to be the least likely to play with an ankle injury; he didn?t practice all week.? Running back Beanie Wells, back from IR, is now questionable with a knee injury.? Jets receiver Clyde Gates is doubtful with a concussion.? Tim Tebow reportedly will be inactive due to broken ribs that have him listed as questionable.

Panthers at Chiefs

Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart is doubtful with an ankle injury.? Quarterback Cam Newton has a right wrist injury, but he is listed as probable and missed no practice time.? Chiefs tackle Branden Albert is questionable with a back injury, as is linebacker Tamba Hali, who has an injured knee.

Bengals at Chargers

Receiver Mohamed Sanu is out with a foot injury that may require season-ending surgery.? Running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis is probable with an ankle injury.? Chargers wideout Eddie Royal is out with a hamstring.? Safety Eric Weddle is probable due a concussion suffered on that 4th-and-29 block from Anquan Boldin.

Browns at Raiders

Cleveland quarterback Brandon Weeden has been cleared to play after suffering a concussion on Sunday.? Running back Trent Richardson is probable with chest, rib, and finger injuries.? Raiders running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson are questionable with ankle injuries.? Two of Oakland?s running backs, Taiwan Jones (ankle) and Marcel Reece (hamstring, quadricep), are probable.

Texans at Titans

A whopping 21 Texans are probable.? Out are cornerback Johnathan Joseph (hamstring, groin) and linebacker Brooks Reed (groin).? Titans linebacker Colin McCarthy (concussion) is out with a concussion.? Receiver Kenny Britt is probable with a knee injury.

Colts at Lions

The Colts have no major injuries.? Lions receiver Calvin Johnson (thumb) and running back Mikel Leshoure (ankle) are probable.? Safety Louis Delmas (knee) is questionable.

Jaguars at Bills

Receivers Justin Blackmon (groin) and Cecil Shorts (hamstring) are probable after unexpectedly missing practice on Thursday.? Twenty-two Bills show up on the injury report, with defensive ends Mark Anderson (knee) and Chris Kelsay (neck) out.

Vikings at Packers

Minnesota receiver Percy Harvin is doubtful once again with an ankle injury.? Nine others are probable.? Six Packers are out, including linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring).? Receiver Greg Jennings is slated to play for the first time since September, listed as probable after recovering from hernia surgery.

Patriots at Dolphins

Defensive end Chandler Jones (ankle), guard Logan Mankins (ankle, calf), and tight end Rob Gronkowski (forearm, hip) are out for New England.? A total of 15 Patriots are questionable, including four receivers and tight end Aaron Hernandez (ankle).? The Dolphins have no major injuries.

Steelers at Ravens

Receiver Antonio Brown (ankle) and safety Troy Polamalu (calf) are probable after extended absences.? Seahawks at Bears

Seattle receiver Sidney Rice is questionable with a calf injury.? Running back Marshawn Lynch is probable with a back injury.? For the Bears, receiver Devin Hester (concussion) and guard Chris Spencer (knee) are out.? Receiver Alshon Jeffery (knee) is doubtful.

Buccaneers at Broncos

The Bucs have only four guys on the list, and all are probable.? Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley is questionable with wrist and hip injuries.

Eagles at Cowboys

Running back LeSean McCoy and quarterback Mike Vick are both out with concussions.? Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) is questionable, but he?s expected to play.? Mobile Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses

Mobile Marketing is an important aspect of your small business marketing, especially if you want to be up to date with the way the world?s evolving. Although most marketing campaigns take mobiles into account, they don?t consider its strategy or its compatibility with the goals of the campaign. Instead they usually just focus on technical aspects and techniques (for example bar codes or SMS campaigns). But in a world where more than 99% of some countries? employer firms (like for example those in the US) are small businesses, being left behind literally means dying. The thing is that in the United States today more businesses close down than open, and that?s a fact, so being on the right track is certainly the only right path to follow.

mob strat

But what?s the best mobile marketing strategy to follow?

In first place your business has to comprehend how the message will be consumed. People have different capabilities, time and attention spam depending on whether they?re at home or at work, and how the customer or consumer to be consumes the message creates a different brand experience. This means that a consumer will feel differently about your brand if he or she finds a bar code in a magazine or in a placard in a store, so you should exploit this difference of context to your business? benefit.

Bear in mind that if you?re trying to get people to visit your website then it should be mobile-optimized, and also bear in mind that it?s much better to have a website that?s optimized for mobile than just a business? app because consumers don?t use all of their apps due to mobile application fatigue.

Also remeber that mobile marketing efforts should have defined analytics built into them, and an important part of your business? campaign has to be defining what data your able to collect and what can be learnt from it (a certain ad?s number of views or number of impressions is practically useless if considered on its own). Other aspects to bear in mind are age and gender of those viewing your ads as well as where they came accross it (for example which magazine they scanned the QR code from) and at what time. All of this is obviously enough information for you to consider in order to reach your potential consumers because it allows for you to offer customizable services and nothing?s better than that for any kind of business (big or small).

Another thing you can do is to give your customers in-store oportunities, meaning that you give them incentives to return to your store by sending them coupons (to be received via app or SMS once they?ve entered the store and checked in) for them to take advantage of. This is explained further in our post called Make Small Businesses Grow with Mobile Coupons. Click here to read about it.

Finally, remember that mobile marketing isn?t mobile advertising, but much more, it?s engaging in a relationship with your consumer. It?s learning to know him or her better and on the whole it?s the best way to boost your business.

People not hooked on fish could get their omega-3 through new dairy products, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Not everyone has a taste for fish, even though it is a natural source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

And while a growing number of omega-3 enriched foods may net health benefits for people who resist the lure of salmon or sashimi, milk remains the product that has gotten away in what has become a billion-dollar health industry.

But now, food science researchers at Virginia Tech may have reeled milk into the omega-3 delivery system, showing it is possible to incorporate fish oil into milk and dairy-based beverages in amounts sufficient to promote heart health, without destroying the product's taste or limiting its lifespan.

Even better, the milk passes the sniff test. Twenty-five volunteers evaluated one-ounce cups of standard 2 percent milk alongside samples of skim milk containing 78 parts butter oil to 22 parts fish oil in institutionally approved study conditions.

"We couldn't find any aroma differences," said Susan E. Duncan, a professor of food science and technology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "We were concerned the fish oil would undergo a chemical process called oxidation, which would shorten the milk's shelf life, or the milk would acquire a cardboard or paint flavor by reacting with the fish oil. It appears we have a product that is stable, with no chemical taste or smell issues."

The study, featured in the November issue of the Journal of Dairy Science, tested four different ratios of butter oil to fish oil in the production of pasteurized, fatty acid-fortified beverages.

The aroma-free formulation delivered 432 milligrams of heart-healthy fatty acids per cup, close to the 500 milligram daily target for healthy people suggested by a broad range of health studies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests daily consumption of 250 milligrams per day in healthy adults.

Research has shown omega-3 fatty acids are helpful for preventing coronary disease, reducing inflammation, assisting infant brain development, and maintaining brain function.

Meanwhile, the American Heart Association recommends eating two servings of fatty fish per week, citing research that has shown omega-3 fatty acids decrease the risk of potentially fatal heart arrhythmias, decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth of atherosclerotic plaque, and slightly lower blood pressure.

But fish hasn't caught on with everyone, making room for new foods and beverages fortified with omega-3s in an expanding marketplace. Sales are expected to reach more than $3 billion in 2016, according to marketing analysts.

"I think the dairy industry can look at our study and determine whether it is plausible to modify its products," Duncan said. "I would like to help people who love milk, yogurt, and dairy, which have intrinsic nutritional value, address an additional need in their diets, especially if they don't like to eat fish or can't afford it. One of these dairy servings a day apparently is enough to sustain enough continuous omega-3 to benefit heart health."

If such a product catches on with consumers, Duncan said the next step for researchers is to follow groups of volunteers in an epidemiological study of whether the food improves health outcomes.

"Milk was first fortified with Vitamin D as a way to fight rickets -- a disease that leads to soft or weak bones," said Kerry E. Kaylegian, a dairy foods research and extension associate with Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, who was not involved in the research. "It was a good approach to address a dietary deficiency disease, because so many people drink milk, which is already loaded with nutrients. This study describes fortification of milk with omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. We can't say lack of those compounds definitively causes cardiac disease, but there is evidence that they protect us and contribute to heart and brain health. Milk would be a good delivery vehicle for those nutrients."

Insects beware: The sea anemone is coming

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? As insects evolve to become resistant to insecticides, the need to develop new ways to control pests grows. A team of scientists from Leuven, Belgium have discovered that the sea anemone's venom harbors several toxins that promise to become a new generation of insecticides that are environmentally friendly and avoid resistance by the insects. Since these toxins disable ion channels that mediate pain and inflammation, they could also spur drug development aimed at pain, cardiac disorders, epilepsy and seizure disorders, and immunological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. This finding is described in the December 2012 issue of The FASEB Journal.

"Are toxins friend or foe? The more we understand these toxins, they are more friend, and less foe," said Jan Tytgat, Ph.D., co-author of this study from the Laboratory of Toxicology at the University of Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. "Toxicology shows us how to exploit Mother Nature's biodiversity for better and healthier living."

To make this discovery, Tytgat and colleagues extracted venom from the sea anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima, and purified three main toxins present in the venom. The toxins were characterized in depth, using biochemical and electrophysiological techniques. This provided insight into their structure, functional role and mechanisms of action. The discovery of these toxins may be considered similar to the discovery of a new drug, as they are compounds which could lead to new insecticides and possibly new treatments for human diseases.

"Because these toxins are aimed at important ion channels present not only in insect cells, they form the leading edge of our new biotechnology. Discovery of this useful marine toxin should provide additional incentive to preserve the fragile coral reefs where anemones thrive," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "But, given current attitudes, I suspect there's a better chance of a sea anemone killing a stink bug than for us to reverse our inroads on ocean life."
