Kendrick Lamar, Gabrielle Douglas among BET Award winners

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Teenage Olympian Gabrielle Douglas, rapper Kendrick Lamar, actor Jamie Foxx as well as singers Rihanna and Nicki Minaj were among the top winners at the annual BET Awards on Sunday.

The BET Awards celebrate black musicians, actors and athletes. The program is televised on the cable TV network BET, Black Entertainment Television, part of Viacom Inc.

Lamar, who scored eight nominations, won the awards for best new artist and best male hip-hop artist at the 3-1/2 hour show at Hollywood's Nokia Theater, which was hosted by actor and comedian Chris Tucker.

Speaking to "all my little homeboys and homegirls back in the city," Lamar noted that he too came from a world of food stamps, welfare and public assistance housing.

"You're looking me on TV right now. This is living proof that you can do anything you put your mind to," Lamar said.

Douglas, 17 and an Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics, took home both the Young Stars award and the Sportswoman of the Year honor. "I'm really shocked right now," Douglas said after winning her second award of the night.

Drake's "Started at the Bottom" won Video of the Year, one of the night's top awards. He also won the Viewers' Choice award.

Best Female Hip-Hop Artist went to Nicki Minaj for a fourth consecutive year. She said each time she wins, "it's a humbling experience."

Rihanna took home the prize for Best Female R&B Pop Artist, while Miguel won the Best Male R&B Pop Artist award.

Foxx, who starred in "Django Unchained," was named Best Actor.

Foxx paid tribute to "acting gods" he had met during his life, including Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte, as well as "Django Unchained" director Quentin Tarantino.

Kerry Washington of the television show "Scandals" won Best Actress.

The Sportsman of the Year honor went to NBA and Miami Heat star LeBron James, while another Heat player, Dwyane Wade, was presented with the humanitarian award as founder of the Wade's World Foundation, aimed at helping at-risk children in underserved communities with educational, health and family service programs.

Veteran R&B singer and former Gap Band lead vocalist Charlie Wilson was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Justin Timberlake, who performed alongside Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg in tribute to Wilson's career.

The BET award for Best Movie went to the romantic comedy "Think Like a Man."

Rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were named Best Group, while Best Collaboration went to A$ap Rocky, featuring Drake, 2 Chainz and Lamar, for "Problems."

Mary Mary won the award for Best Gospel Artist, while Emeli Sande was named Best International Act. U.K. Best International Act: Africa was won by Ice Prince.

The show featured performances by a host of top performers including Robin Thicke, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Miguel, Ciara and Janelle Monae, who closed the awards joined by Erykah Badu.

Carrie Underwood gets political on Twitter

(AP) ? Carrie Underwood has found her voice on Twitter.

The country music star and former "American Idol" champion admitted 3? years ago she was afraid to join Twitter, but since deciding to take the leap in 2011 she's embraced the social media tool in ways that go beyond fan engagement. Recently she used Twitter to oppose the "Ag Gag" bill in Tennessee, reaching out directly to Gov. Bill Haslam with a boldly worded message saying if he signed it "he needs to expect me at his front door."

It was the first time she's taken a political stand so publicly, and it seemed to have an impact. Haslam contacted Underwood to discuss the issue and went on to veto the bill that opponents claimed would have stopped investigation into animal abuse on farms.

"He really just wanted to hear everybody's point of view, which I really respected," Underwood said in a recent interview. "So it's kind of neat that (tweet) led to that, which was really cool."

Dave Smith, spokesman for Tennessee's Republican governor, said Haslam spoke to people on both sides and that Underwood's was the only celebrity counsel he sought.

Underwood also recently declared "Hug a soldier day," and puts her support behind movements like the "End It" anti-slavery campaign and animals rights. She has 2 million followers.

"Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a thinker and I'm a planner and I would never weigh in on anything unless I know the full story on it," Underwood said. "So I do my research. I don't think I'm a bandwagon kind of person. People are always retweeting sort of weird stuff. I do my own research. I'm not a political person at all. I doubt anyone can tell you what party I mostly affiliate myself with. But that was just something that was in my backyard."

As you might expect, there was pushback. Rather than shrink from it, she responded with some grit.

"I realize it's not necessarily so scary," she said. "Most of the comments I get back on anything are positive. There's the occasional negative one, but I enjoy blocking that person."

(AP) ? Taliban suicide attackers blew up a truck bomb early Tuesday at the gates of a NATO supplier's compound in Kabul and sprayed gunfire at security personnel, killing five guards and two civilians, Afghan officials said.

The morning attack was the latest in a series targeting high-profile locations in the Afghan capital. The attacks have made clear the Taliban have no intention of ending the violence, even as they say they are willing to enter peace negotiations.

The U.N. deputy chief, Jan Eliasson, who was in Kabul wrapping up a five-day trip to Afghanistan when the attack took place, said continued violence could only harm the Taliban's own cause.

"I would hope that there would be steps taken by the leadership of the Taliban to realize that the tool of violence in any case cannot instill confidence in the population," he said. "There's been too much suffering there and there are too many widows, too many father-and-motherless children in Afghanistan and I think we need to instill a sense of calm."

But the Taliban showed no signs of backing off, telling The Associated Press by phone that Tuesday's attack was part of its offensive started in the spring to target military and diplomatic sites with suicide bombers.

"This has no link to the peace process," the militants' spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said. "It will continue all over the country occupied by the foreigners."

The attack started before dawn, when a suicide bomber drove a small truck to the outer gate of the logistics center used to supply NATO troops and detonated it. The explosion made a massive crater in the ground and damaged a guard tower, said Kabul provincial police chief Mohammad Ayuob Salangi.

Two truck drivers waiting nearby to enter the compound were also killed in the blast, along with the bomber.

Four gunmen then stormed into the breach and battled with security guards, and an Afghan police special response team that was called in, for about an hour before being killed, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. One Afghan and four Nepalese guards were also killed, the ministry said.

Mujahid quickly claimed responsibility for the assault, saying it was "a very effective attack that embarrassed the enemy."

In a statement on the Taliban website, Mujahid said only three militants were involved in the "attack on a big foreign base important for NATO logistics," and listed them by name.

The Taliban last month opened a new political office in the Gulf nation of Qatar, and indicated that they were prepared to enter into Afghan peace talks, but at the same time did not renounce violence.

The following week, Taliban suicide attackers were able to get past preliminary security checks and open fire on guards at a gate to the presidential palace in a bold attack at the heart of the Afghan government.

Earlier in June, heavily armed fighters launched a failed assault on NATO's operational headquarters at Kabul's international airport and blew up a car bomb outside Afghanistan's Supreme Court.

Eliasson said if U.N. support was needed to help start the peace process, he was glad to provide it ? but only if requested by the Afghan government.

"The reconciliation process must be, if it is to be successful, Afghan-led," he said. "What I hope will take place is, of course, contacts between the two parties ... and as long as those contacts continue, there's no specific need for the United Nations to be involved."

Also Tuesday, in the eastern province of Paktika, local police commander Azizullah Karwan said six Taliban militants were killed in a clash with one of his patrols.

He said no police were killed or injured.

In Ghazni, the neighboring province to the west, three local police were killed and three wounded in a gunbattle with the Taliban around midday, said district police chief Kasim Desiwal. Four Taliban fighters were killed, he said.

Onan Mulumba, of Makerere University, is awarded 1st Prize in the global case study competition to raise awareness about the essential role of librarians powering research in developing countries

London, United Kingdom -- The Research4Life partnership announced today the winner of the case study competition to recognize the role played by librarians in building research capacity and boosting output among scientists, doctors and policymakers. Onan Mulumba, Agricultural Librarian for the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at Makerere University in Uganda was chosen from among 45 highly competitive applicants by a panel of 12 distinguished judges and international experts in the field of research capacity building. As part of the first prize, Onan Mulumba has been invited to serve as the first user to join the Research4Life Executive Council. The prize includes an all-expenses paid trip to attend the Partners' General Meeting in Rome, Italy in September 2013.

"The Research4Life programmes began because we heard and responded to our users' needs," said Barbara Aronson, competition judge and founder of HINARI. It's very gratifying that these two librarians, who have made such an important impact in their institutions, will be continuing our tradition of user voices helping guide our work."

"Research4Life has significantly boosted teaching and research at Makerere University, and is the main source of reference for both students and faculty. In addition, Research4Life databases have drastically reduced the use of print resources and this has helped to minimize congestion in the libraries," said Onan Mulumba, "As a result, researchers have come to acknowledge the efforts and roles librarians play in promoting teaching and research at Makerere University."

"AGORA, Research4Life's agricultural programme, will soon celebrate its 10th anniversary, and we're delighted that the winner of the Library Impact Competition highlights the work of an agricultural librarian from a prestigious African university," said Stephen Rudgard, AGORA Programme Manager at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, "Onan Mulumba has clearly succeeded in influencing Makerere's scientists, academics and students to make greater use of AGORA and so to improve the quality of their research, their lectures, and their dissertations, possibly bringing them into the international stage."

An Honorable Mention for a second case study was awarded to Cynthia Kimani, Librarian at the Kenya Medical Research Institute Library. Cynthia has been invited to attend the annual Research4Life partner meeting and serve on Research4Life's newly founded library advisory council which provides a forum for direct engagement between the Research4Life user community and the partnership. The Council aims to give Research4Life's customers a prominent voice and support the early identification of trends, challenges and opportunities from the research and library communities in developing countries
