The 2004 U2 iPod nearly didn't happen, was saved by beer

The deal to make the red and black iPod nearly fell apart, but Apple designer Jony Ive and U2 frontman Bono found common ground over a pint.

Remember the U2 iPod? It looks like a relic now, but at the time was quite the novelty -- an edgy black and red amid the sea of white, minimalist design Apple was pushing out.

Turns out it almost didn't happen. Vanity Fair has a lengthy story describing the design philosophies of Apple design head Jonathan Ive and fellow designer Marc Newson, as they get ready to showcase products especially designed for an auction next month organized by U2 frontman Bono's Product (Red) anti-H.I.V. campaign.

One of the best gems of the story describes how Ive and Bono met through Steve Jobs. And when the deal to make a U2-themed iPod was close to falling apart, Bono and Ive ironed out the kinks over a brew:

Part of the deal included a special-edition iPod that Bono had requested, manufactured in black with a red dial. (At the time, iPods came only in white.) When the deal seemed like it might founder, Ive was dispatched in person to take the prototype black-red iPod to Bono at his home in Dublin. The two men went drinking in a pub and sorted out the remaining issues in the deal. "Jony makes some of his greatest decisions while having a drink," Bono said to me over the phone, speaking from his home in France.

China Takes Air Pollution More Seriously: $280 Billion Worth, Supposedly

We cover China's air pollution problems with depressing frequency on Green Car Reports, but the country's pollution problems have until now been far more than token schemes are able to deal with.

That could change over the next few years, as the Chinese government pledges to invest $283 billion to tackle air pollution.

According to state newspaper The China Daily (via CBC News), the sum will go towards measures aimed at a "visible improvement" in the near-opaque air in many Chinese cities.

Beijing, nearby Tianjin and the Hebei province will be the main benefactors of the investment, equivalent to more than the total economic output of Hong Kong.

Several Chinese cities and locales have launched their own initiatives to curb pollution in recent months. The Hebei province and its capital Shijiazhuang recently introduced a lottery to buy cars in order to reduce the number of vehicles on its roads, while Beijing implemented a pollution tax and pledged to remove the most polluting vehicles from its roads.

The moves follow several months earlier this year of the worst pollution ever recorded, and mounting public frustration with the country's poor air quality.

As a rapidly developing nation, China has poured decades of effort into economic growth, with environmental concerns taking a back seat. That's now changing as several major cities sit cloaked in smog, with water pollution also a major concern.

The problem now is whether that money will truly reach projects aimed at cutting down on pollution, China's local governments not known for their transparency with such issues. How much of China's huge investment benefits the smog-choked people in the streets remains to be seen...

La. city police arrested men under sodomy law

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? An East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office task force arrested at least 12 men since 2011 under a sodomy law invalidated a decade ago the U.S. Supreme Court, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The most recent arrest was July 18 when a man discussed or agreed to have sex with a male undercover agent, The Advocate (http://bit.ly/13mSpdc) reported. The task force was trying to deter sexual activities at the parish's public parks.

Although sex in public and sex solicitation for money are illegal in Louisiana, neither was part of these 12 cases, and most of the men were arrested after agreeing to have sex away from the park at a private residence, District Attorney Hillar Moore III told the newspaper.

"The sheriff's office's intentions are all good," Moore said. "But from what I've seen of these cases, legally, we found no criminal violation."

The Supreme Court ruled in 2003 that a Texas law against oral or anal sex was invalid. Louisiana was among nine states with such laws. Richard Leyoub, then attorney general, said the high court's ruling made Louisiana's law unenforceable.

The sheriff's office sent a statement Sunday to the newspaper saying it "should have taken a different approach" to worries about park safety, the newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/14pLnEv ).

"We will consult with others in the legislative and judicial branches to see what can be done to remove this law from the criminal code that each deputy receives and to also find alternative ways to deter sexual and lewd activity from our parks," it said.

Metro Councilman John Delgado said Sheriff Sid Gautreaux owed an apology to the men arrested and the entire parish.

Delgado said he will file public records requests to determine when the district attorney's office told the sheriff's office that the men targeted had committed no crime.

"You cannot simply hide behind not knowing that the law had been changed by the U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2003," Delgado said in email to the sheriff's office. "The sheriff's actions are a violation of the civil rights of these men under the 5th and 14th Amendments. Ignorance of the law is no excuse ... Doesn't your office tell people that all the time?"

Well, Jennifer is sick of all the lies.

?We have yet to set any date,? Jennifer tells the Associated Press. ?There have been no canceled weddings. There have been no postponed weddings. There have been no arguments about where to get married. Just clearing all that up.?

She says,?We just want to do it when it?s perfect, and we?re not rushed, and no one is rushing from a job or rushing to a job. And, you know, we already feel married.?
