NBA standings 2012: Timberwolves fighting to stay alive in competitive Northwest

The Timberwolves shouldn't be too panicked about their recent struggles but they better get their act together soon.

After dropping their past two games, the Timberwolves (13-13) are now fourth in the NBA's most well-rounded division.

Each of those losses have been by only three points to likely playoff teams though so Minnesota fans shouldn't be too concerned about the recent cold streak.

Looking ahead, the Timberwolves will have plenty of time to make up ground with four of their next six games being against divisional foes.

But before they can get into that portion, Minnesota will be playing host to a reeling Phoenix Suns team Saturday evening. The Suns have lost four in a row and 11 of their last 15 so it shouldn't be too difficult for the Timberwolves to take care of business.

Below are the complete Western Conference standings:

Goaltenders steal show in Canada?s win over U.S. at world juniors

UFA, Russia ? Canadian goaltender Malcolm Subban had his best game of the world junior hockey championship so far in a 2-1 win over the United States on Sunday.

The Belleville Bulls goaltender made 36 saves for Canada, who are unbeaten in three games and face host Russia on New Year?s Eve for first place in Pool B.

The winner gets a bye to the semifinal, while the loser must play in a quarter-final. Russia is currently second in the pool at 2-0-1.

Monday?s game will feature the first overall picks from the last two NHL drafts.

The Edmonton Oilers made Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby, B.C., their No. 1 selection in 2011 and chose Russian forward Nail Yakupov first this year. Both are captains of their respective countries in the tournament.

Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Strome scored in the first period for Canada against the Americans (1-2), who need to beat Slovakia on Monday to earn a playoff berth.

Subban made several key saves as Canada was outshot 37 to 32 in the game. Canada was minus forwards Boone Jenner and J.C. Lipon, who both served suspensions.

They will be back in Canada?s lineup against Russia, but the Canadians played with 11 forwards Sunday.

?It was really a character win in a lot of ways,? Canadian head coach Steve Spott said. ?The moral of the story tonight is our depth players, our penalty killers, you know obviously Malcolm Subban.

?I?m really proud of him. It?s a big moment for Malcolm. He stood up tall to the task tonight.?

Subban had given up three goals on 28 shots in each of his previous two wins in the tournament.

Canada had to kill off a boarding penalty to Nugent-Hopkins with one minute 37 seconds remaining in the game.

Defenceman Jacob Trouba pulled the U.S. within a goal at 11:02. But the Americans hurt their own comeback attempt with penalties.

Captain Jake McCabe and forward Ryan Hartman took misconducts for checking to the head later in the third period. Trouba and forward Tyler Biggs took minors as well.

U.S. goaltender John Gibson, who played for Spott?s Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League, also had an excellent game with 30 saves.

?You expect the best from him every night and he laid it out on the line for us tonight,? U.S. assistant captain J.T. Miller said. ?Penalties kind of took us out of it. It?s a bad feeling.?

The U.S., which finished seventh in the 2012 tournament, has lost back-to-back games by one goal with a 2-1 loss to the Russians as well.

?We had our chances,? coach Phil Housley said. ?It?s one thing if you?re not getting the opportunities to score, but we are. We?ve played two very good hockey teams and had a chance to tie the game in both.?

When Ty Rattie and Phil Danault were foiled on a short-handed, two-on-one scoring chance, Trouba scored a power-play goal on the following rush back to Canada?s end.

Strome made it 2-0 at 18:19 of the first period with his fourth of the tournament. Brett Ritchie worked the puck out from behind the net and Strome snapped it upstairs on Gibson.

Nugent-Hopkins opened the scoring for Canada at 7:13 in the first period, when his team won the faceoff in the U.S. zone. He feathered a low wrist shot past Gibson.

Subban, a Boston Bruins prospect, stopped John Gaudreau on a breakaway in the first period and held off an American flurry during a double minor to Canada?s Griffin Reinhart early in the second.

Watch the Scariest Skiing Lesson of All Time

When it comes to teaching a kid to ski, we can all be fairly sure this guy's doing it wrong.

[More from Mashable: Chuckle at the Best News Bloopers of 2012]

Here's a quick synopsis of the video above (which is best seen to be believed): Person identified by Hypervocal as "jackass dad" sends a small child -- who clearly has little to no skiing experience -- gliding down a rather formidable slope. Gliding turns to hurtling as the kid loses control and shrieks in terror while picking up speed. "Jackass dad" instructor's expert advice? Simply yelling "Pizza!" repeatedly and with increasing aggression.

[More from Mashable: Kobe Bryant Finally Joins Twitter ? Kind Of]

Eventually, the child tumbles, yard sale style. He cries. Then "Jackass dad" has more words of wisdom: "Good job, dude! Dude, you survived!? He goes for the high five, but the kid's not having it. Some small measure of justice is served.

Putin says he will sign anti-US adoptions bill

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks at the final Cabinet meeting of the year in the government headquarters in Moscow, Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012. (AP Photo/RIA-Novosti, Dmitry Astakhov, Government Press Service)

(AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he will sign a controversial bill barring Americans from adopting Russian children, as the Kremlin's children's rights advocate recommended extending the ban to the rest of the world.

The bill is part of the country's increasingly confrontational stance with the West and has angered some Russians who argue it victimizes kids to make a political point.

The law would block dozens of Russian children now in the process of being adopted by American families from leaving the country and cut off a major route out of often dismal orphanages. Russia is the single biggest source of adopted children in the U.S., with more than 60,000 Russian children being taken in by Americans over the past two decades.

"I still don't see any reasons why I should not sign it," Putin said at a televised meeting. He went on to say that he "intends" to do so.

UNICEF estimates that there are about 740,000 children not in parental custody in Russia, while only 18,000 Russians are now waiting to adopt a child. Russian officials say they want to encourage more Russians to adopt Russian orphans.

Children rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov on Thursday petitioned the president to extend the ban to other countries.

"There is huge money and questionable people involved in the semi-legal schemes of exporting children," he tweeted.

Kremlin critics say Astakhov is trying to extend the ban only to get more publicity and win more favors with Putin. A graduate of the KGB law school and a celebrity lawyer, Astakhov was a pro-Putin activist before becoming a children rights ombudsman and is now seen as the Kremlin's voice on adoption issues.

"This is cynicism beyond limits," opposition leader Ilya Yashin tweeted. "The children rights ombudsman is depriving children of a future."

The bill is retaliation for an American law that calls for sanctions against Russian officials deemed to be human rights violators. Kremlin critics say that means Russian officials who own property in the West and send their children to Western schools would lose access to their assets and families.

Putin said U.S. authorities routinely let Americans suspected of violence toward Russian adoptees go unpunished ? a clear reference to Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler for whom the bill is named. The child was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

The U.S. State Department says it regrets the Russian Parliament's decision to pass the bill, saying it would prevent many children from growing up in families.

Astakhov said Wednesday that 46 children who were about to be adopted in the United States would remain in Russia if the bill comes into effect.

The adoption of the bill follows weeks of hysterical media campaign on Kremlin-controlled television that lambasts American adoptive parents and adoption agencies that allegedly bribe their way into getting Russian children.

A few lawmakers claimed that some Russian children were adopted by Americans only to be used for organ transplants and become sex toys or cannon fodder for the U.S. Army.

Critics of the bill have left dozens of stuffed toys and candles outside the parliament's lower and upper houses to express solidarity with Russian orphans.

The U.S. law, called the Magnitsky Act, stems from the case of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who died in jail after being arrested by police officers whom he accused of a $230 million tax fraud. The law prohibits officials allegedly involved in his death from entering the U.S.

RolePlayGateway?

The Final Epilogue is a fanfic roleplay of the game The Last Story. It takes place generations after the game's ending, when the original members of the mercenary group have been long passed away. A new ruler has stepped up to take the throne, and everything went haywire.

The new ruler cared only for himself. Unlike other tyrants, this one happens to simply not care for his people. Instead, the ruler made decisions only to benefit himelf in petty ways (like the levee, building up his castle, having feasts and parties every meal of everyday). And there are even more threats to society now.

The citizens of Lazulis City lived peacefully with the Gurak population, until now. Now that there is a weak ruler in the Argannan throne, Segregation Groups have risen up to kill off or at least dominate the other race. What's more is that the Reptids have dug their ways out of the underground, and now are pillaging the citizens of Lazulis City, Outskirts.

However, there is hope. A new generation of the Zael Mercenaries have risen up to help the people, and relinquish the power of the ruler. They will do quests, fend of reptids, crush the Segregation Groups, and give the throne to the rumored lost child of Argannan.

Roles:

Mercenary
The Mecenaries are the protagonists of this roleplay. They try to help as much people as they can in the long run while trying to complete the ultimate goal.

The King
Julian is, to put it simple, a sick bastard who would let his people rot as long as his desires are fullfilled. Julian supports the Human Segregation Group. He is one of the antagonists of this roleplay.

Human Segregation Group
A group of human extremists who want to cause havoc on the Gurak. They want to seperate and isolate the Gurak as much as possible. Some want to kill the whole population so the humans only remain. Either way, they want to do harm to the Gurak population. Their leader is Lucian.

Leader of the Human Segregation Group
Lucian is as clever and as sneaky as a snake, and he is as deadly as one, too. His words can easily set into your head, and Lucian can easily manipulate you. His swordsmanship is unparalled to anyone still alive. However, you can still compare it to Sir Therius's skill in the sword.

Gurak Segregation Group
The Gurak clone of the Human Segregation Group. They want to overthrow King Julian as well and place their leader, Zane, on the throne.

Leader of the Gurak Segregation Group
Zane is a direct descendant of Zangurak, the former Gurak king who was killed in the war against the humans. Because of his family's history, many humans had actually despised him. Thus, he created the Gurak Segregation Group out of anger.

The Knights
While they are charged with Julian's orders, they try to resist as much as possible without him knowing. They support the mercenaries, and when the band rebels, the knights will fight alongside them. However, there are some who are part of the Segregation Groups, and a handful are fu;ly devoted to King Julian.

Other:
Magic:
Some people are able to use magic. The elements consist of light, darkness, star, nature, fire, and ice. Using the element the smae as the enemy's results in it absorbing the magic and healing itself. Using the opposite element results in more damage, however the same applies to you (you only get an element if you are a mage.).

Using magic also results in the manifestation of magic circles. They usually deal damage to the enemy except for healing circles. Fire circles add fire element to your physical attacks, ice makes ice attacks, etc etc for the other elements. You also have healing spells, which result in healing circles. Stand on them and you will get healed overtime until you are fully regenerated. After a few minutes, the circle will dissipitate on it's own.

There are three more circles. which aren't manifested by magic spells. They manifest only at the user's comman, but only ofr a short time. Damage circles keep weakening opponents, and poison circles poison the opponent. The last circle, Death circle, does not effect the opponent itself. It uses spikes that rise from the ground to attack the opponent. If they survive, they will be given the Death status, meaning that if they don't get into a heal circle, they will die. The Death Circle disappears after attacking. Damage Circles only dissipitate after the user has died.

However, there are certain skills that warriors (non magic users) can use to diffuse those circles. (Unlike the game, I will NOT allow the effects of Diffusion.)
Few mages can also have the spell Reverse, which reverses the effects (heal circles turn into damage circles, ice circles effect the original user and its allies, etc.).

Spirit Attacks:
At the time when you most need it, you would be able to do some kind of strong attack that would have an effect on the enemy. Mages use spells, warriors use slashes or stabs or whatever, and mixed usually make up something unique.
There are also two sacred spells only available to the Argannan family called Ancient Summon and Ancient Barrier. They are both unknown, and you must find out only by casting the spell as an Argannan (marriages do not apply).
Remember: Spirit attacks are extremely rare and it takes a lot of training to even learn them. Even them, I'll allow one spirit attack every ten posts.

Reaction to death of Norman Schwarzkopf

Reaction to the death Thursday of retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf:

___

"With the passing of Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, we've lost an American original. From his decorated service in Vietnam to the historic liberation of Kuwait and his leadership of United States Central Command, Gen. Schwarzkopf stood tall for the country and Army he loved. Our prayers are with the Schwarzkopf family, who tonight can know that his legacy will endure in a nation that is more secure because of his patriotic service." ? President Barack Obama.

___

"Barbara and I mourn the loss of a true American patriot and one of the great military leaders of his generation. A distinguished member of that 'Long Gray Line' hailing from West Point, Gen. Norm Schwarzkopf, to me, epitomized the 'duty, service, country' creed that has defended our freedom and seen this great nation through our most trying international crises. More than that, he was a good and decent man ? and a dear friend. Barbara and I send our condolences to his wife, Brenda, and his wonderful family." ? former President George H.W. Bush.

___

"With the passing of General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, America lost a great patriot and a great soldier. Norm served his country with courage and distinction for over 35 years. The highlight of his career was the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm. 'Stormin' Norman' led the coalition forces to victory, ejecting the Iraqi Army from Kuwait and restoring the rightful government. His leadership not only inspired his troops, but also inspired the nation. He was a good friend of mine, a close buddy. I will miss him. My wife, Alma, joins me in extending our deepest condolences to his wife, Brenda, and to her family." ? former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

___

"The men and women of the Department of Defense join me in mourning the loss of Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, whose 35 years of service in uniform left an indelible imprint on the United States military and on the country. The son of a decorated Army officer, Gen. Schwarzkopf followed his father's legacy of service by enrolling in West Point in the 1950s. His bravery during two tours in Vietnam earned him three Silver Stars, and set him on the path lead our troops into battle in Grenada, and then to take charge of the overall allied effort in the first Gulf War as commander of United States Central Command. Gen. Schwarzkopf's skilled leadership of that campaign liberated the Kuwaiti people and produced a decisive victory for the allied coalition. In the aftermath of that war, Gen. Schwarzkopf was justly recognized as a brilliant strategist and inspiring leader. Today, we recall that enduring legacy and remember him as one of the great military giants of the 20th century. My thoughts and prayers are with the Schwarzkopf family in this time of sadness and grief." ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

___

"I was saddened to learn today of the passing of Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, a fellow West Point graduate, former CENTCOM commander and one of the 20th century's finest soldiers and leaders. I join the civilian and military leaders of our country, and servicemen and women, past and present, in mourning his death. Gen. Schwarzkopf embodied the warrior spirit, serving with distinction in three conflicts over his 35 years of dedicated service. The hallmark of his remarkable career was the swift and decisive victory over Saddam Hussein's forces after they invaded Kuwait. The thoughts and prayers of the Joint Chiefs and the Joint Force are with Gen. Schwarzkopf's family and friends." ? Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Early Childhood Obesity Rates Might Be Slowing Nation-Wide

early childhood obesity decrease

About one in three children in the U.S. are now overweight, and since the 1980s the number of children who are obese has more than tripled. But a new study of 26.7 million young children from low-income families shows that in this group of kids, the tidal wave of obesity might finally be receding.

Being obese as a child not only increases the risk of early-life health problems, such as joint problems, pre-diabetes and social stigmatization, but it also dramatically increases the likelihood of being obese later in life, which can lead to chronic diseases, including cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Children as young as 2 years of age can be obese?and even extremely obese. Early childhood obesity rates, which bring higher health care costs throughout a kid?s life, have been especially high among lower-income families.

?This is the first national study to show that the prevalence of obesity and extreme obesity among young U.S. children may have begun to decline,? the researchers noted in a brief report published online December 25 in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association. (Reports earlier this year suggested that childhood obesity rates were dropping in several U.S. cities.)

The study examined rates of obesity (body mass index calculated by age and gender to be in the 95th percentile or higher?for example, a BMI above 20 for a 2-year-old male?compared with reference growth charts) and extreme obesity (BMI of more than 120 percent above that of the 95th percentile of the reference populations) in children ages 2 to 4 in 30 states and the District of Columbia. The researchers, led by Liping Pan, of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, combed through 12 years of data (1998 to 2010) from the Pediatric Nutritional Surveillance System, which includes information on roughly half of all children on the U.S. who are eligible for federal health care and nutrition assistance.

A subtle but important shift in early childhood obesity rates in this low-income population seems to have begun in 2003. Obesity rates increased from 13.05 percent in 1998 to 15.21 percent in 2003. Soon, however, obesity rates began decreasing, reaching 14.94 percent by 2010. Extreme obesity followed a similar pattern, increasing from 1.75 percent to 2.22 percent from 1998 to 2003, but declining to 2.07 percent by 2010.

Although these changes might seem small, the number of children involved makes for huge health implications. For example, each drop of just one tenth of a percentage point represents some 26,700 children in the study population alone who are no longer obese or extremely obese. And if these trends are occurring in the rest of the population, the long-term health and cost implications are massive.

Public health agencies and the Obama Administration have made battling childhood obesity a priority, although these findings suggest that early childhood obesity rates, at least, were already beginning to decline nearly a decade ago. Some popular prevention strategies include encouraging healthier eating (by reducing intake of highly processed and high-sugar foods and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption) and increased physical activity (both at school and at home).

The newly revealed trends ?indicate modest recent progress of obesity prevention among young children,? the authors noted. ?These finding may have important health implications because of the lifelong health risks of obesity and extreme obesity in early childhood.?

AMD reveals Radeon HD 8000M laptop graphics processors

Had you been cruising these pages in the early hours of this morning, you'd know that the very first laptop to contain AMD's next generation of discrete graphics chips was quietly put up for sale over in Germany. The chipmaker has now confirmed that this machine -- the Asus Vivobook U38DT -- is indeed shipping, with a Trinity APU and hitherto unknown Radeon HD 8555M GPU on board. At the same, it's made a few promises about what the new discrete graphics components are capable of. These claims include the typically confusing graph above, which at first glance may appear to show an 8000M-series chip trebling the performance of NVIDIA's Geforce 650M (of 15-inch Retina MBP fame), but which actually suggests a 20-70 percent lead over the six-month-old competitor -- and with no information about power consumption to help us make a proper judgment. There are some straightforward factual details too, thank goodness, and you'll find them right after the break.

Gallup papers give glimpse into US polling history

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) ? Groundbreaking pollster George Gallup is known for founding the survey organization that tracks the nation's opinion of the president, but he began his career with a more local concern: getting his mother-in-law elected to statewide office.

Ola Babcock Miller was a longshot in the 1932 race for Iowa Secretary of State. No woman had been elected to the office, and neither had a Democrat in 76 years. But Miller had a secret weapon.

Gallup, an advertising executive, conducted an informal poll of voters and learned that highway safety was a top concern, said his granddaughter, Alison Gallup. Miller ran on that issue, won a close race and founded what would become the Iowa State Patrol. The election changed Gallup's life too: It got him hooked on political polling, the field that would make him a household name.

The campaign is recounted in a collection of papers that Gallup's family donated recently to the University of Iowa documenting the life of the father of modern political polling. The more than 200 boxes of papers now being sorted by librarians are expected to be studied by researchers seeking an intimate glimpse into the earliest polling for elections, advertising and Hollywood.

"It shows the trial and error and the birth of the science of survey research. In that sense, for social scientists, it's absolutely significant. It's the foundation of their work," said Alison Gallup, 52, a graphic designer in Tennessee. "He was a true pioneer."

Early surveys, tabulation results and correspondence are part of the collection at the university, where Gallup became interested in public opinion as editor of The Daily Iowan student newspaper and a graduate student who researched newspaper readers' preferences.

Gallup promised to give his papers to the university before he died in 1984, but formal arrangements weren't made. His son, pollster George Gallup Jr., organized the papers while writing an unpublished biography of his father before his own death last year. When Gallup's grandchildren decided to donate the collection, they knew it had to go to Iowa because Gallup had championed the university and considered it the birthplace of his work, Alison Gallup said.

Gallup earned three degrees ? a bachelor's, master's and doctorate ? at Iowa before moving to New York City to work for an advertising agency in the 1930s. He became a leader in the field of market research and founded the American Institute of Public Opinion in 1935. It later became the Gallup Organization.

He came to prominence after his polling correctly predicted Franklin Delano Roosevelt would defeat Alfred Landon in the 1936 presidential race. Gallup had criticized the most popular poll at the time, the Literary Digest, saying it was skewed to the middle- and upper- classes because it drew names from phone lists, auto registration and rosters of membership clubs, Alison Gallup said.

In contrast, Gallup worked to get a representative sample from all classes. He predicted a Roosevelt victory, the Literary Digest predicted a Landon victory, and the nation got a lesson in sampling, his granddaughter said. Gallup continued to work throughout his career on how to ask questions that were not leading and how to design the best sample to obtain the most accurate results. He was driving by the idea that in a democracy, people should have their voice heard, she said.

The Gallup collection includes training manuals for field workers, who then asked questions in-person rather than by phone. Alison Gallup said her grandfather and his team would interview farmers in fields and residents at their homes.

Gallup branched out from politics, founding the Audience Research Institute to help Hollywood. The institute asked moviegoers whether they would be more likely to see films with certain titles and measured reactions to screenings. Gallup became close with studio powerhouses, including Walt Disney and Samuel Goldwyn.

Alison Gallup said her grandfather helped pick the title of the 1946 award-winning film, "The Best Years of Our Lives," and worked on "Gone with the Wind" and other films. His research influenced everything from casts to release dates.

Gallup's legacy lives on through the company he founded. His family sold the Gallup Organization to Selection Research after his death, but it continues to operate worldwide.

The Gallup Organization became a lightning rod for criticism this year after its polls showed Republican challenger Mitt Romney leading President Barack Obama until very late in the presidential campaign. Most other pollsters had Obama slightly ahead.

His papers show Gallup faced similar criticism early and often. They include scrapbooks of what Gallup's family called "crank mail," people who complained bitterly about polling results and accused him of trying to shape public opinion, not measure it. Campaign-style posters and buttons declared, "Gallup didn't ask me, either."

A dark hour for Gallup came in the 1948 election, when he incorrectly predicted that challenger Thomas Dewey would defeat President Harry Truman. Alison Gallup said that her grandfather stopped polling too early to detect a late shift toward Truman. He learned from the mistake and afterward always polled until the day before the election.

She said Gallup's incorrect prediction led to a "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline made famous in a photograph of the victorious Truman holding up the newspaper.

Gallup claimed that a policeman who pulled him over for driving the wrong way soon after the election saw his license and quipped, "Wrong again, Dr. Gallup," his granddaughter recalled. But Gallup survived the humiliation and a congressional investigation and continued his work.

Greg Prickman, who oversees the university's special collections, said this one documents an important field in American history.

"Polling is a part of our lives and has been for many years now. I think it will always be a source of interest and fascination for people," he said. "I think we will get interest in the collection for that reason. People will be curious about, how did we get to this place? What was it like before the Internet and how did this develop?"

Cancel Un-Cancellable Accounts By Posting Offensive Content

Thierry figures out a clever way to cancel online accounts:

As per Lifehacker's recommendations, I recently started cleaning up my online presence, only to notice that a lot of online services don't offer the option to delete your account or unsubscribe from their mailings. Here's my solution:

  1. Log into the web site
  2. Change your nickname and all of your information to content that could be offensive to the owners of the website (like "Eat S**t," without the censoring)
  3. Change your email address to an address generated with a "temporary inbox" service
  4. Confirm the adress change from that temporary inbox

Now, the culprit is stuck with a useless account with garbage information and your account will probably get banned, thus letting you free.

Obviously you don't want to get too offensive and actually offend people, because that just isn't nice. But this is pretty clever?read the terms of service of that account to see what kind of stuff will get you banned permanently, then go for it (you could even report your own account to move the process along).

Beware Amazon Prime Offers That Fudge Past Shipping Costs

Tmurph135 gets fibbed to by Amazon:

When checking out on Amazon today, I saw a note saying, "We noticed you have spent more than $80 on shipping in the past year. Stop paying for shipping and get your items faster with Amazon Prime." I've been thinking of signing up for Amazon Prime for a long time, and thought, "Well, if I'm spending $80+ on shipping anyway, I should sign up for Prime and at least get free two-day shipping."

But when I investigated to see how much I'd actually spent on shipping, it was WAY below $80. The only way to get to $80+ on my account is by using shipping totals before the discount that comes with 5-8 day Super Saver Shipping.

In other words, if shipping is normally $6.68 and I opt for free Super Saver Shipping, a -$6.68 shows up on my invoice. But Amazon still counts that $6.68 as money I've "spent" on shipping in the past year to convince me to buy a Prime subscription.

They're giving you BS number to make you think you're spending more on shipping than you actually are, just so you'll buy Prime subscription.

I called Amazon and spoke with someone there who was unaware of how my supposed $80 figure was reached. Even the woman I spoke with thought Amazon could be including the pre-Super Saver shipping charge.

Keep Small USB Dongles In Your Computer and Never Lose Them Again

Jim doesn't mess with tiny USB dongles:

I have a Logitech mouse that I occasionally use with my laptop when I travel, and its receiver is very very small?sticking out only a few mm from my laptop. This is great when I have it plugged in, but it's very easy to lose! So, I just keep it in my laptop all the time. If I have to unplug it to free up a port, I'll put it in my pocket, but otherwise it stays plugged in all the time, whether I'm using the mouse or not. It still fits in my laptop sleeve just fine, and I'm much less likely to lose it!

Master Your Interviews By Noting What You Want to Portray

Ronan always remembers what he wants to show off in a job interview:

Keep the end game in mind. Before phone and in-person interviews, I like to use this trick: Think of three characteristics you would like to portray during the interview (creative, analytical, polished, intelligent, interested, whatever!). Write those three attributes at the top of your notes, and as you glance down at them during the interview, you'll have a great reminder of how you want to present yourself.
