Have you been thinking about going vegetarian but not quite ready to give up meat entirely? There?s actually a way to ease into it.

Flexitarians, or ?flexible vegetarians,? concentrate their diet of the fruit and vegetable part of the food pyramid, but they do allow themselves some meat. Some for instance, eat only fruit and vegetables during the week and have a little meat, poultry or fish on the weekends while other may simple eat less meat, for instance substituting half the meat in tacos with black beans.

According to WebMD, vegetarians live 3.6 years longer on average than meat-eaters, which probably is partially attributable to the fact thy weigh about 15 percent less than non-vegetarians.

Simply following a part-time vegetarian diet alone for up to six months can lead to an average weight loss of about 30 pounds, WebMD reports. Coupled with a healthy fitness regimen, the follower of this diet can lose even more.

Of course, some people have ethical reasons for wanting to reduce their intake of meat, poultry and fish, including saving on the production of greenhouse gases, a side effect of farming. Flexitarians often favor eating fresh, seasonal and locally produced foods.

Reducing the amount of meat in your diet also can have a positive effect on your pocketbook.

Registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner, author of The Flexitarian Diet, recommends adopting the lifestyle by starting with thwo meetaless days a week and limiting the amount of meat to about 26 ounces weekly. Over time, a day or two of meatless meals can be added, reducing meat to the status of a side dish rather than a main dish.
