Incumbent declared winner in Montenegro election

PODGORICA, Montenegro (AP) ? Election authorities said Monday that incumbent Filip Vujanovic won Montenegro's presidential race, despite opposition claims that their candidate was the winner.

Opposition members said earlier that they would not recognize Vujanovic's victory in Sunday's ballot, even if confirmed by the state election commission ? a move that threatens to throw the small Balkan nation into political turmoil and undermine its bid for European Union membership.

Opposition official Goran Danilovic insisted that the opposition candidate, Miodrag Lekic, won the vote for the influential but ceremonial position. Danilovic told The Associated Press that "our victory is as clear as a day."

"None of us have the right to recognize election fraud," he said.

But the election commission said Vujanovic won 51.21 percent of the votes, compared to 48.29 percent garnered by Lekic.

Vujanovic, who is backed by the government, is seeking his second presidential term since Montenegro gained independence in 2006. Lekic, a former diplomat, has had support of the country's otherwise divided opposition parties.

Montenegro, a nation of more than 600,000, is striving to join the EU and opened entry talks last year.
