Unity 4.2 Brings Support for Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry 10

Today, Unity officially announced the availability of version 4.2 of their development platform, one that arrives with support for more mobile operating systems than before.

As part of the new release, Unity is available on Microsoft?s Windows Phone 8 operating system, as well as on the BlackBerry 10 platform, the company unveiled.

?That?s right, we?ve doubled the number of mobile platforms Unity supports! Now it?s up to you guys to create new games and port existing titles to these platforms so even more people can benefit from your creative talents,? Unity notes in a recent blog post.

?In Unity 4.2, all users of the free version of Unity can publish to any mobile platform they wish, be it Windows Phone 8, Windows Store, iOS, Android or BlackBerry 10 without it costing a dime.?

At the same time, the company announced that the Windows Store Pro deployment option is available with support for Windows Phone 8 to all Unity Pro users for free.

?Plus, Unity Pro users can benefit from advanced Unity features when deploying their iOS, Android or BlackBerry 10 projects by purchasing Unity iOS Pro, Android Pro or BlackBerry 10 Pro Add-On products from the Unity Store,? the company announced.

A series of other changes were included in the new release as well, some of which were aimed at Android and iOS devices, such as the enabled Deferred Lighting and OpenGL ES 3.0 support for Android.

The new Unity 4.2 also comes with support for Android Library Projects (no compilation support, so the libraries have to be pre-compiled), as well as with AndroidJavaProxy ? support for implementing Java interfaces in C#.

Furthermore, as part of the new release, the editor can update the Android SDK if it does not match the required dependencies. There is also a CrashReporter API for crash detection added for the iOS platform.

The editor has been modified to show a warning when RenderTexture usage is not optimal for tile-based or multi-GPU systems when the mobile graphics emulation mode is enabled.
